PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 11 Navy heavyweight crew team put forth a solid effort on Saturday afternoon over a four-race slate against No. 6 Syracuse and No. 14 Cornell. Re-engaging a rivalry that was sidelined for the past two seasons, the three teams raced on a 2,000-meter stretch of Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey with the Goes Trophy and Stagg Points Cup on the line for the victors. At the conclusion of Saturday's event, the Mids walked away with a win by their fourth varsity crew and runner-up results from their second and third varsities.
Â
Racing in reverse order, the fourth varsity competition was the first to be contested on Lake Carnegie. The Mids had two entries in the race with the fourth and fifth crews suited up for action. The crews from Annapolis were fast from start to finish and went one-two in the race with respective times of 5:43.40 for the Mids' 4V and 5:46.88 for the Mids' 5V. Navy's fifth crew was over 2.5 seconds quicker than Cornell's fourth boat, who placed third at 5:49.44. Syracuse's fourth crew rounded out the race in fourth at 5:49.66.
Â
The race for the Stagg Points Cup began with the ensuing third varsity eight contest. Syracuse was the class of the three-team field as they clocked in 3.18 seconds faster than Navy with a winning time of 5:45.30. The Mids held off a game Big Red squad in a tight race for second place. Navy posted a 5:48.48 time, 0.57 seconds ahead of Cornell's 5:49.05.
Â
The order of finish was mirrored in the second varsity eight race as Syracuse won its second consecutive event with a 4.69-second margin of victory over Navy, 5:45.30 to 5:49.99. The Mids' second varsity was substantially faster than that of Cornell as the Big Red posted a 5:56.49 time.
Â
The afternoon of racing wrapped up with the first varsity eight crews laying it all on the line for the Goes Trophy. Using the momentum that it had built up over the previous two races, Syracuse clinched both the Goes Trophy and Stagg Points Cup with a nearly five-second advantage in the first varsity contest. The victorious Orange turned in a time of 5:30.90 ahead of the Big Red, who finished second at 5:35.88 and the Mids, who crossed the finish line in third at 5:39.00.
Â
"We had mixed results today, "remarked
Rob Friedrich, the Tom & Candy Knudson Director of Navy Rowing. "Our fourth and fifth boats were fantastic and definitely represented our deep fleet with pride. Our second and third boats raced well, but could not keep up with some very impressive Syracuse boats. The first varsity could have raced better, I know there is a lot of untapped speed, that we have yet to display in that crew."
Â
Navy will continue competing for trophies as next Saturday the Mids will take off down the Charles River alongside Harvard and Penn with the Adams Cup on the line.
