#24 Women’s Lacrosse Hosts American in Midweek Tilt

Opening draw between the Midshipmen and the Eagles is slated for 5:00 p.m. on ESPN+

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 24 Navy women's lacrosse team (12-2, 6-0 Patriot League) hosts American (8-5, 3-2) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
The No. 24 Midshipmen enter the weekend 12-2 on the season, including a 6-0 mark in Patriot League play. Navy secured a spot in the 2022 Patriot League Tournament with a 13-9 victory against Holy Cross at Kuzniewski Field in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
 
Offensively, Navy has tallied 266 points on 192 goals and 74 assists in 14 games. Of the 18 players who have scored points, 10 have been upperclassmen (juniors / seniors) and eight have been underclassmen (freshmen / sophomores).  Through 14 games, the upperclassmen have registered 119 goals, accounting for 62.0% of the goals scored, while the underclassmen have tallied 73 scores. The upperclassmen have accounted for 63.2% of the total points scored with 66.2% of the team's assists.
 
The Mids are led by Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.), Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.), Kasey Dietzel (Warrington, Pa.), Gil Eby (Towson, Md.), Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.), and Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.).
 
Roelofs paces the offense with a team-high 49 points on a team-best 36 goals and team-high 13 assists. Denton and Dietzel are next with 32 points with Denton chipping in 26 goals and six assist and Dietzel registering 20 goals and 12 helpers. Eby (25g 6a) and Ryan (24g 7a) are tied with 31 points apiece, while Beardmore (13g 11a) rounds out the 20-point scorers 23 points.
 
The Mids have picked up 283 ground balls, won 212 draw controls, caused 106 turnovers, and tallied 122 saves.
 
Christine Fiore (Darian, Conn.) has grabbed a team-high 30 ground balls, while Eby and Grace Loughery (Perkasie, Pa.) added 28 and 26 GBs, respectively. Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) have tallied 25 ground balls each, while Dietzel has added 24. Roelofs leads the team with 82 draw controls, while Dietzel is second with 57. Bell and Loughery lead the team with 15 caused turnovers apiece, while Fiore and Erin Carson (New Albany, Ohio) have added 12 each.
 
Torres leads the team with 109 of Navy's 122 saves in just over 767 minutes of action. Torres has earned 11 victories with a 51.9 save percentage and 7.90 goals against average. She is joined by Emma Richardell (Bethesda, Md.) who has 13 stops in 68 and a half minutes of action.
 
Scouting the Opponent
American enters the week 8-5 overall with a 3-2 mark in the Patriot League. The Eagles won their last game, defeating Bucknell, 12-11, in Washington, D.C.
 
Offensively, American is led by four student-athletes – Emma Vinall (47 points), Stefanie Walsh (45), Kendall Goldblum (45), and Maddy Spratt (40) – who have registered 40 or more points this season. Vinall, Goldblum, and Walsh pace the team with 38, 34, and 31 goals, respectively. Spratt is balanced with a team-high 20 assists to go along with 20 scores.
 
In goal, Mary Alice Collins has played a lion-share of the minutes between the pipes. She has tallied 548 minutes with 100 saves and 115 goals allowed for a .465 save percentage and 12.59 goals against average.
 
All-Time Series
The game marks the 16th meeting between the two teams. Navy holds a 14-1 (.933) overall record against American with a 7-0 mark at home. The Midshipmen have won 13 in a row against the Eagles.
 
Navy and American have met on the lacrosse field at least once every season since the Midshipmen became full Division I with the exception of 2020 when the conference season was canceled due to COVID.
 
The Mids defense has held AU to single digits eight times, including a series low one goal in 2014, while the Navy offense has registered 20 or more goals in the last four contests.
 
The last time the two teams met Annapolis, the Midshipmen posted a 20-10 victory over the Eagles.
 
National Rankings
The ILWomen / IWLCA Division I Poll was officially announced on Monday morning and the Navy women's lacrosse team remained ranked in the national poll. The Mids enter the week ranked No. 24. The Mids have been ranked seven consecutive weeks this season. In its history, Navy has been ranked 70 total weeks, including a streak of 47 consecutive weeks from the final poll of the 2017 season (May 30, 2017) to April 12, 2021. In addition, the Midshipmen are receiving votes according to the US Lacrosse rankings.
 
Last Time Out: #24 Navy 13, Holy Cross 9 (April 16, 2022)
The No. 24 Navy women's lacrosse team (12-2, 6-0 Patriot League) posted a 13-9 victory against Holy Cross (5-8, 2-4) at Kuzniewski Field in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Midshipmen secured a spot in the 2022 Patriot League Tournament.
 
Offensively, Navy scored 13 goals on 34 shots with four assists on the day. Seven Midshipmen scored goals on the day, including five with multiple scores. Reagan Roelofs (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the way with three goals for her eighth hat trick in the last nine contests. Leelee Denton (Nashville, Tenn.), Tori DiCarlo (Rosemont, Pa.), Kasey Dietzel (Warrenton, Pa.), and Gil Eby (Towson, Md.) added two scores apiece. For DiCarlo, it was the freshman's first multi-score game of her young career. Bobbie Haney (Woodbine, Md.) led the way for Navy with two assists, while Lindsay Beardmore (Annapolis, Md.) and Charlotte Ryan (Tully, N.Y.) each added helpers.
 
The Midshipmen dominated the draw control battle, winning 18 of 26 draws in the game. Roelofs led the way with 10 draws, marking the 15th time in her 52-game career that she won double-digit draw controls. Dietzel added four, while Eby finished with three and Isabelle Thornburg (Alexandria, Va.) won one.
 
Defensively, the Navy back line limited the home team to nine goals on 19 shots. This season, the Midshipmen have held all six Patriot League opponents to single-digit goals performances.
 
The Mids caused 10 of the Crusaders' 23 turnovers on the day with eight Midshipmen being credited with caused turnovers. Alexis Bell (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Erin Carson (New Albany, Ohio) led the way with two caused turnovers apiece. Navy finished with 20 ground balls and converted 19 of 21 clear attempts. Jo Torres (Prince Frederick, Md.) finished with two saves and three ground balls in a winning effort. Bell and Eby added three ground balls each, while Carson, Dietzel, and Haney recorded two GB apiece.
