Olympian Devon Allen Inspired in Role with Navy Track and Field
Two-time Olympian and volunteer assistant Devon Allen is putting down his coaching whistle on Saturday to take part in the Navy Spring Meet II on Saturday at Ingram Field in Annapolis as the world's top-rated hurdler will compete in the 100m and 200m dashes, as well as the 110m hurdles.
"I love it," Allen said of his role as a volunteer with the Navy track and field team. "The student-athletes here are very dedicated and very motivated. They put in a lot of hard work. They have a lot of obligations outside of track and field and then they spend a lot of time on the track trying to improve as well. It is definitely inspiring as an athlete and as a coach when you get to work with kids that want to work hard and do everything you are saying to help them accomplish something; it is pretty special. I love seeing these athletes get better and do well."
A two-sport athlete at the University of Oregon, Allen is a three-time U.S. National Champion (2014, 2016, and 2018) in the 110m hurdles and a two-time Olympian, reaching the finals in both the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At his final meet of the 2021 season, he set a personal best of 12.99 seconds and became the 13th American hurdler to ever break the 13-second barrier in this event.
While at Oregon, Allen trained with current Director of Navy Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook. Once arriving in Annapolis, Cook continued to coach Allen, helping him qualify for the Olympics. Allen eventually joined Navy staff as a volunteer assistant, directing and guiding Midshipmen student-athletes in what it takes to be a champion.
"I think the journey is similar," Allen stated. "These midshipmen are trying to be the best at whatever they are doing, no matter what job they get in the military or out here on the track. They are trying to excel at that and they do a good job with that. That is how I treat everything in life. There is nothing worth doing if you are not going to do it 100-percent and give your all."
Allen recently signed a contract to play wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles on April 8, 2022.
"My goal as an athlete and in athletics is to go all in and that is what I have decided to do with this track thing. Now, I am transitioning into football, which has been a dream of mine since I was five years old. It is an amazing opportunity. I am going to take all the advantage I can of it."
Fans can see Allen on the track at the Navy Spring Meet II on Saturday. He will compete in the 110m hurdles at 1:55 p.m. before running in the 100m dash at 2:35 p.m. Allen will conclude the competition in the 200m dash at 3:30 p.m. The meet is free and open to the public.
Lowenstein, Simmons Earn Patriot League Weekly Honors (April 19, 2022)
The Patriot League announced its weekly track and field awards and a pair of Navy student-athletes were recognized for their performances at the Larry Ellis Invitational last weekend.
Hannah Lowenstein (Pompano Beach, Fla.) was named PL Women's Field Athlete of the Week, while Jonathan Simmons (Oakland, Calif.) was tabbed Men's Rookie of the Week.
Lowenstein competed in the high jump for Navy over the weekend at the Larry Ellis Invite. She registered a season-best jump of 1.74m (5-08.50), which bested her previous personal record jump by a centimeter and was good enough for the third-best jump in Navy history. The sophomore is one centimeter off of the Navy school record of 1.75m. Lowenstein ranks No. 1 in the Patriot League by four centimeters, while coming in at No. 81 in the NCAA so far this season.
Simmons clocked an IC4A time of 48.08 in the 400m dash to come in sixth at the Larry Ellis Invitational, the top finisher for Navy in the event. The performance is the second-best all season for Navy behind teammate Jacques Guillaume (47.88), as well as the second-best time of the year in the Patriot League. It ranks 239th in the NCAA and 44th in the country among freshmen.

The Navy track and field team combined for 45 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks at the Larry Ellis Invitational over the weekend at Princeton's Weaver Track and Field Stadium. Sami Bollinger (Temecula, Calif.), who set the school record in the triple jump to start the month, etched her name in the record books once again with the 10th-best distance in school history with a triple jump performance of 12.00m (39-04.50).
In addition,
Sabrina Sutter (Shingletown, Calif.) notched a time of 24.31 (3.2) to win the 200m dash. The time would have ranked sixth in program history if it had been wind legal.
Navy posted a pair of top-10 performances all-time on the men's side.
Brahmir Vick (Middletown, Del.) clocked a 14.07 in the 110m hurdles to register the ninth fastest performance in school history.
The long jump saw Caden Dailey (Centreville, Va.) record a distance of 7.61m (24-11.75), finishing half an inch shy of tying the school record in the event.
