Navy Lightweights to Conclude Regular Season at Penn

Mids and Quakers to race for Callow Cup on the Schuylkill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 3 Navy lightweight rowing team will conclude its 2022 regular season with a head-to-head contest versus No. 6 Penn on the Schuylkill River on Saturday morning. With the Callow Cup and 1919 Team Points Trophy up for grab to the winner of the first varsity and overall points competition between the Mids and Quakers the action promises to be hard fought. The three-race competition is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

The entire race slate on Saturday starts with the second varsity eight crews facing off at 9:30 a.m. before the action turns to the Callow Cup trophy race at 9:50 a.m. The competition will wrap up 20 minutes later at 10:10 with the third varsity eight race. Navy will have an extra entry in the final race as the Mids' fourth varsity will be competing as a guest.

Most Recent Navy-Penn Matchup: April 27, 2019 in Annapolis
In a day wrought with history, Mother Nature was the story as the 100th anniversary competition between No. 7 Navy and No. 6 Penn was cut down to just two races on April 27, 2019. Originally set for four individual races, the Mids and Quakers were only able to line up in the first and second varsity events before the water conditions and wind gusts that were causing intermittent whitecaps and waves throughout won out. Racing on the Navy "Wisconsin" course further up the Severn River, Penn came away with a pair wins, including a photo finish in the first varsity race.

As the conditions on the Severn continued to deteriorate and with the Callow Cup on the line for the victor of the first varsity event, the Mids and Quakers battled stroke-for-stroke over the 2,000-meter course. As the boats came to the finish line, Penn claimed the victory by just 0.3 seconds in a photo finish, 5:59.7 to 6:00.0.

What's at Stake
Callow Cup
Put into rotation beginning in 1955, the trophy has been given to the winner of the varsity race between Navy and Penn every year except 1973, 2020 and 2021. The trophy is named after Russell "Rusty" Callow, who coached at both Penn and Navy and retired in 1959 after being associated with rowing for more than 50 years. All-time, Navy holds a 33-31 advantage, though Penn has taken the cup home in four of the last five meetings.

1919 Trophy
Originally presented at the first-ever meeting between the Mids and Quakers, the trophy now serves as the team points prize for best combined results in the annual meet.

Last Time Out: April 23 vs. Harvard and Delaware
Racing on the Severn River for the final time in the spring 2022 season, the Navy lightweight team turned in a dominant performance on Saturday morning as the team defeated Harvard in all five races, including four winning margins of 10-plus seconds. Stronger than the Crimson in all four eight-man contests, as well as in a four-man race, Mids' dominance resulted in the Haines and Col. Paulovich Team Points Trophies coming home to Hubbard Hall.

Strong from the opening sprint, the Mids' first varsity eight cruised down the 2,000-meter stretch of the Severn and won by 11.7 seconds with a final decision of 6:09.8 to 6:21.5 over the Crimson. Racing as a guest crew, the Blue Hens clocked in over seven seconds back at 6:28.8.
