ANNAPOLIS, Md. ‑‑ The Navy men's tennis team posted a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross, Friday morning at the USNA Tennis Courts in Annapolis, Md.  The match between the top-seeded Mids (30-10) and the eighth-seeded Crusaders (4-17) was the first of four quarterfinal round matches during the Patriot League Tournament slated to be held on the day.

The win advances Navy to the semifinal round where it will play either No. 4 Bucknell or No. 5 Boston U. Saturday at 10 a.m.  (Note: This story will be updated throughout Friday with results from the tournament.)

3 p.m. update -- Bucknell defeats Boston U., 4-3.  Navy will play the Bison at 10 a.m. Saturday.  The Mids defeated Bucknell, 6-1, on April 9.

Navy had defeated Holy Cross, 7-0, when the teams met April 10 in Worcester, Mass.

Today's match began with the Mids winning at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead.  The first match to finish was the No. 1 contest in which Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) and Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.) defeated Declan O'Flynn and Diego Tran Rosado by the score of 6-3.  Navy clinched the point when its No. 3 tandem of Jack Dabek (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) and Luke Garner (Fr., Arnold, Md.) posted a 6-2 win over Jeremy Clark and Alexander Ruenhorst.

The remaining match had the Navy pairing of Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) leading William Kelleher and Connor Nelson, 5-2, when play was stopped.

"We had a very solid start to the match with our play in doubles to take a 1-0 lead," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Segraves made the score 2-0 when he defeated Mikey Prokopis, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.  Thompson followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kelleher at the No. 1 flight.  Panyan closed out the match when he posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jeremy Clark at No. 5 singles.

"Gavin and Derrick took advantage of some openings to help build our 3-0 lead," said Garner.  "Sasha was able to pull away after a competitive first set to clinch the match."

In the remaining matches, Finn Garner led, 7-5, 1-0, at No. 3, Jake Fishkin (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) held a 6-0, 4-1 advantage at No. 4 and Dabek was leading, 6-1, 5-2, at No. 6 singles.
