BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Navy track and field women's team concluded competition at the NCAA East Preliminaries at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. All three competitors on the day posted top-10 performances in program history.
"You can't be upset with three top-10 performances, especially at the end of the year," Director of Navy Track and Field / Cross Country
Jamie Cook said after the competition. "They did a really good job. It was the first time for all of them being here so it was a really big deal."
The day started with
Hannah Lowenstein (Pompano Beach, Fla.) in the high jump. The sophomore cleared the opening height of 1.66m (5-05.25) on her second attempt. At the second height of 1.71m (5-07.25), Lowenstein once again needed two attempts to clear the bar. The height tied for the ninth-best performance in program history. Unfortunately, Lowenstein was unable to clear any additional heights, ending her time at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
"Hannah did great," Cook said of his high jumper. "It was a really impressive high jump competition. She did a good job. Top 10 all-time is impressive."
In the 3,000m steeplechase,
Ellie Abraham (Brookings, S.D.) and
Winter Boese (Clark, Colo.) each posted top-10 all-time performances. Abraham finished with a time of 10:24.53, which was the fourth best in program history. Boese was just seconds behind with a time of 10:32.02, which was the eighth-best performance in Navy history. The duo has combined for eight of Navy's all-time top-10 times in the women's steeplechase with seven of those times coming this season.
"Talking with Coach Lewnes, she is really happy with how they performed," stated Cook. "You want to be a be able to have a big performance, but it has been a long year for some of these athletes. They performed really well, and I couldn't be prouder."
Earlier this week, sophomore Braden Presser (Liberty, Mo.) punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore. with a sixth-place finish in the javelin.
"I think we did really well overall," Cook added of the team's overall performance at the NCAA East Preliminaries. "We would've liked to have gotten more people to Nationals, but a lot of them are really young. The fact that we were able to get in here and compete well; the athletes were confident. Obviously, I am happy with how they performed and how the year has gone."
