ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Rising senior
Mimi Schrader has been announced as the team captain of the Navy Women's Basketball program for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. A three-year letterwinner and starter during portions of each of her first three seasons in Annapolis, Schrader (Plymouth, Minn.) was selected by her teammates to serve in the role of team captain. She will work with third-year head coach
Tim Taylor and Navy's coaching staff to help lead the program as it looks to build off the momentum of an exciting postseason run this past March in the Patriot League Tournament.
"Captain selection is a great honor and means so much to me," said Schrader. "Time has flown by and I have enjoyed learning and growing each year. Lindsey, Imani and I can't believe we are already Firsties! My goal as team captain is to lay a strong foundation and create a great culture that each year can be built upon; a team that everyone is proud to represent. Playing for the Naval Academy is a huge blessing. I am honored to help mentor and guide our team as we start a new season. Go Navy!"
"I am truly excited to have Mimi be our captain this year," remarked Taylor. "She epitomizes the qualities that the Naval Academy and our program stand for on a daily basis. She is a true servant leader who lifts everyone up around her through her positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond for her teammates. She has embraced the Academy from the moment she stepped on the Yard and is excited for this opportunity to lead and serve our program and be a part of the Captains Council as well.
"I know she already has plans to shape our program through her leadership and to develop a sustainable culture moving forward. We are really excited to watch her growth as a leader too."
A member of Navy's rotation from day one as a freshman in 2019-20, Schrader has appeared in 62 career games and averaged 21.6 minutes per contest. Filling roles in the backcourt at both guard positions throughout her time with the Mids, she has set career-high in minutes played (779) points scored (124), rebounds (75) and assists (36) as a junior in 2021-22. Headlined by a career-best 18-point outing at Colgate on Jan. 12 on the strength of four three-points, Schrader reached double-digits in four games this past season.
A decorated member of the Brigade of Midshipmen, Schrader was recently named as the recipient of the Rear Admiral Draper L. Kauffman Leadership Award. The award is presented to that midshipman who, as a Midshipman Second Class, is judged by their peers to have the highest level of the principles and beliefs that RADM Kauffman represented both in and out of uniform. The spirit of RADM Kauffman was one of voluntarism, service without expectation of reward or recognition, and resolute focus on mission accomplishment. An ocean engineering major, Schrader has been named to the Dant's List in five of her first six semesters at the Naval Academy.
