Women's Soccer Welcomes Maryland and Niagara to Close Homestand

Mids and Terps set for Thursday night tilt; Mids and Purple Eagles to play on Sunday afternoon

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team will wrap up its season-opening five-game homestand with non-conference tilts against Maryland (0-0-1) on Thursday night and Niagara (0-1) on Sunday afternoon. These final two contests will conclude a busy beginning to the Mids' 2023 season will have seen the team play five games over a 10-day period of time. Navy will take a 2-0-1 record into this weekend's slate of action after collecting victories over The Citadel and Marymount. Kickoff for the Navy-Maryland game is set for 8 p.m., while the Navy-Niagara matchup is scheduled for a 1 p.m. opening whistle at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

All of the women's soccer action this week will have live stats provided online, as well as ESPN+ broadcasts. ESPN+ is a subscription-based streaming service that requires patrons to sign-up for monthly or yearly plans prior to tuning into the contest.

Navy vs. Maryland
Thursday will be the 15th meeting between the two schools in a series that began in 1996 ... All-time, Maryland holds a 10-2-2 advantage over Navy ... In that first-ever matchup on Oct. 22, 1996, the Terrapins defeated the Mids, 4-0 in College Park ... Playing five times over that first 10-year span, Maryland earned victories in all five matchups ... The Mids earned their first tie versus the Terps on Sept. 8, 2014 with a 1-1 draw at home ... More recently, the teams have alternated results with each squad collecting two wins with a 2018 tie sprinkled in ... Navy secured its first win in the intrastate series in 2016 as the Mids defeated the Terps, 5-3 in Annapolis on Sept. 7.

Most Recent Navy-Maryland Matchup: August 29, 2021
Navy found itself in an early 1-0 hole before flipping the script and coming from behind to secure the team's second-ever win over the Terps by a score of 3-1. Making the short trip to College Park and Ludwig Field, the Mids fell behind 55 seconds into the contest to a fast-starting Terrapin team. From that point in the action, Navy slowly made in-roads on the scoreboard knotting the game in the 33rd minute before pushing ahead in the 52nd and adding an insurance marker in the 62nd minute to give the visitors their first victory in College Park.
 
Jeana Freeman drew Navy even in the first half, while Caitlin Doran netted the go-ahead goal for her second game-winner of the week. Alexa Riddle scored her first collegiate goal to give the Mids their final 3-1 result. Sophomore defender Chloe Dawson had a hand in both Freeman and Riddle's goals for the first multi-assist game of her young career. In goal, Mattie Gallagher spearheaded Navy's defensive effort as she stopped Maryland's final five shots on goal after giving up the early marker.

In the 3-1 victory, Navy was outshot by Maryland, 19-11 with the Terps also holding a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
 
Navy vs. Niagara
The Mids and Purple Eagles will be meeting up on Sunday for just the second time in series history ... The first and only previous matchup came on the road at Niagara on Sept. 2, 2016; in that game, Navy secured a 3-1 victory ... That was the last time that Navy had played a team that was an active member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) ... All-time, Navy has a record of (32-1-1) against current MAAC schools: Mount St. Mary's (15-0), Rider (4-0-1), Marist (3-0), Monmouth (3-1), Siena (2-0), Iona (1-0), Manhattan (1-0), Niagara (1-0), Quinnipiac (1-0), Saint Peter's (1-0), Fairfield (0-1)

Early goals in both the first and second half helped the Navy women's soccer defeat Niagara, 3-1 at Niagara Soccer Field. Navy found offensive production from an array of players as Clare MacAdam, Eleanor Pratt and Cadie Higginson all tallied goals, while Natalie Dzhandzhapanyan, Madeline Ostrowski, Ash Fairow  and Karli Sottung each chipped in with an assist.

Navy held advantages over Niagara in total shots, 18-8, shots on goal, 9-6, and corner kicks, 4-1.

Dayton Wetherby finished the contest with five saves in goal for the Mids.

Last Time Out: August 23 vs. Marymount
The Navy women's soccer team improved on its undefeated start to the 2022 season with a dominant 6-0 shutout victory over Marymount on Tuesday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids (2-0-1) scored early and often in the non-conference tilt and saw its defensive alignment hold the Saints (0-0) to just one shot during the contest.
 
Navy's offensive attack was spearheaded by the sophomore duo of Tori Liesen and Ashley Yi, who had a hand in all six of the Mids' goals. Yi tallied a game-high two goals, while Liesen tallied a goal and three assists from her midfield position. Navy's three other goals were registered by Olivia Foster, Ellie Wiltse-Hiatt and Isabella Romano. The scores by Liesen, Romano, Wiltse-Hiatt, Yi were all the first of their respective careers. Also of note, Liesen's three assists tied a single-game program record. The sophomore midfielder is the 13th player in program history to reach that milestone and the first since Rachel Feldman and Meghan Hegarty each had a trio of helpers against Hampton on Oct. 27, 2015.

In the 6-0 victory, Navy outshot Marymount, 20-1 with a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal. The hosts held a 13-2 margin in corner kicks.

Parking / Shuttle / Ticket Information
Fans are reminded that the general public does not have access to drive their vehicles on to the U.S. Naval Academy. Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a fee and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting one hour before the game and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed. Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID. Enter Gate 5 off Taylor Ave. to park at the stadium. Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. All soccer contests at Glenn Warner will be free of charge.
