Men's Soccer Continues Season-Opening Weekend with Fairfield on Sunday

Navy and the Stags Are Set for the First Meeting in Series History

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coming off a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's to start the 2022 season, the Navy men's soccer team continues a five-game homestand with Fairfield at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25 from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

The Midshipmen enter Sunday's contest at 1-0-0 overall, while the Stags sit 0-1-0 on the year.

Last Time Out
Navy got the campaign rolling on Thursday with its shutout win against the Hawks, as junior Baba Kallie's tally in the opening moments of the second half proved to be the difference … After the team's went scoreless in the first half, junior David Jackson intercepted a SJU pass near the goal and fed Kallie in the middle, who buried his shot to the right side just 27 seconds into the final half … Kallie nearly found the net again in the 63rd minute after a pass from sophomore Wasswa Robbins put Kallie wide-open in front, but his shot just missed the right post … Tallying all seven of their corner kicks in the second half, the Hawks got five corners in the final 16 minutes, but were only able to create three scoring chances … Navy sophomore Pierce Holbrook made his final of three saves with just over two minutes remaining in the contest, earning the goalkeeper a shutout in his first career start … Robbins, Holbrook and fellow sophomores Connor Walcott and Noah Ward all made their collegiate debuts, as did freshmen Tommy Lockhart, A.J. Schuetz and Jalen Grant.

Notes on the Mids
Kallie has now scored the game-winning goal in Navy's first victory of the season for the second-straight campaign, as his tally against Marist on Aug. 29, 2021 proved to be the difference in another 1-0 Navy home win that gave the Mids their first victory of that campaign after a 2-2 tie at UMBC three days prior … With Thursday's shutout, Holbrook became the first Navy goalkeeper record a full clean sheet in their first collegiate start since Thomas Jenkins made three saves to shut out American, 2-0, on Sept. 28, 2005 … For Jackson, he has now tallied an assist in three-straight contests dating back to last season, and has seven points (one goal, five assists) over his last eight games.

Navy vs. Fairfield
Sunday's match will be the first-ever meeting between the Mids and the Stags … Navy holds a 15-3-2 record all-time against current members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference … The Mids are 7-1-1 against current MAAC schools at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, having hosted a MAAC opponent in four of the past five seasons with the exception being 2020-21 when the MAAC played a conference-only schedule.

Scouting the Stags
Fairfield opened the 2022 campaign with an 8-2 loss at UMBC on Friday night … The Stags closed the 2021 season strong, posting a 5-3-1 mark in the final half of the campaign that included a run to the MAAC semifinal round … Last year's team scored often, netting 29 goals in 18 games and putting up 10 multi-goal performances … Preseason All-MAAC pick Thomas Drillien is one of the top returning scorers for the Stags alongside Rasmus Sorensen Rejnhold, as both players finished second on the team with seven goals apiece last season while Drillien paced the team with five assists … The Stags also return Cormac Pike on the backline, as Pike was the other Fairfield representative on the Preseason All-MAAC Team after playing in all 18 matches for the Stags last year.

Up Next
The Mids will stay in Annapolis next week for a pair of non-conference matchups, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 … Navy then turns around to face St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday, Sept. 4, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
