Lightweight Crew Announces Addition of David Herrick to Coaching Staff

Previously coached at Oregon State, Virginia, Syracuse & Washington State

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Shawn Bagnall and the Navy lightweight rowing program announced on Wednesday the addition of David Herrick as an assistant coach. An eight-year veteran of collegiate coaching, Herrick was most recently on staff at Oregon State as a member of the women's rowing program.

"It has been fun to watch Dave's development as a coach across a few positions, coaching in some great programs along the way," remarked Bagnall. "His passion for the sport is undeniable, and having someone in the assistant coaching role who can work with our outstanding raw talent at Navy was an important element in our search. I am excited to see what he can add to the position, powering the Navy Lightweight program forward in sustained success."

Herrick joins the Navy staff after three years as an assistant coach with the women's team at Oregon State. While with the Beavers, he was in charge of coaching the novice portion of the rowing program, as well as assisting with high school recruiting and managing the team's travel. Though, his first full season in Corvallis was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Herrick and the Beavers came back in 2021 and placed fourth at the Pac-12 Women's Rowing Championships. The following year, Oregon State repeated that fourth place result at the league championships before earning an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Championship. The appearance was the first in program history since 2009.

Prior to coaching at Oregon State, he served as a volunteer and graduate assistant at the University of Virginia from August 2016 through 2019. As a member of the Cavaliers' coaching staff, Herrick was responsible for leading the fourth varsity crew, in addition to novice recruitment and assistant boatman duties.

Herrick had a pair of previous coaching stops before getting to Charlotteville, as he volunteered with the Syracuse men's team during the 2015-16 season as well as with Washington State University for the Cougars' 2014-15 campaign.

Away from the collegiate rowing domain, Herrick has experience coaching with the Penn AC Gold program during the summers of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021 and the USRowing Women's Under-23 Team in 2019.

A four-year collegiate rower at Washington State, Herrick earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors in 2013 and 2014. He graduated from Washington State in 2014 with a B.S. in Psychology and later attained a Master's in Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia in 2019.

"I'm beyond excited to join Coach Bagnall and the N150's," remarked Herrick. "What this program has accomplished in the last several years is tremendous and I'm thrilled at the opportunity to continue that success both on and off the water. The tradition of rowing at the Naval Academy is deep and to be part of that is an honor."
