Men’s Soccer Hits the Road for Longwood

Navy Set for Final Tune-up Before Patriot League Action Opens This Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After finishing up a five-game homestand to begin the season, the Navy men's soccer team (1-2-2) finally goes on the road this week, starting on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, at Longwood (1-1-2). Tuesday's contest will be Longwood's home opener, as the Midshipmen and Lancers square off at 6 p.m. from the Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Va.

The game will be the last non-conference match for the Mids this month before embarking on a six-game stretch through Patriot League play, starting with a Sept. 17 contest at Bucknell and ending on Oct. 15 at Lehigh. Navy will close out its non-conference schedule next month against UMBC (Oct. 19) and at Villanova (Oct. 25).

Packing the Suitcase
The trip to Longwood on Tuesday marks the start of a stretch where Navy plays seven of its next 10 contests away from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, including four road conference games and the annual meeting with Army on Oct. 7 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. … The Mids' next home contest is Sept. 24 against Colgate, while Navy also opens October in Annapolis, hosting Boston University on Oct. 1 … After the meeting with the Terriers, Navy will not host another Patriot League team at Glenn Warner until Oct. 29 against Loyola, with the regular season finale also being at home just a few days later (Nov. 2, vs. American) … Navy went 4-5-1 in games outside of Annapolis last season, going 3-5-1 in true road games … The Mids were outscored 14-11 in true road games in 2021.

Last Time Out
Despite three Mids scoring their first goal of the season on Friday night, including senior Sam Kriel getting his first collegiate tally, Navy was not able to prevent George Washington from matching that offensive output, with the Colonials erasing a 3-1 Navy lead to end the non-conference meeting in a 3-3 tie … Navy launched the opening salvo when junior Zach Wagner buried his own rebound off a blocked shot at 15', but GW's Aaron Kronenberg answered in the 29th minute when he headed the ball in off a Tom Cooklin corner … Junior David Jackson put the Mids ahead once again at 48' with a perfect shot from 22 yards out on a free kick, while Kriel's goal in the 58th minute gave Navy its first two-goal lead of the season … A Navy turnover at 65' led to Tiago Carvalho feeding Elias Norris for the second GW goal, and Carter Humm knotted the game at 3-3 in the 83rd minute on a Cooklin crossing … Sophomore goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook made the biggest play of the night, stopping Cooklin's penalty kick to keep the contest tied in the 85th minute and register his second save of the game.

Navy vs. Longwood
The Mids and Lancers are set for the 11th meeting in the all-time series on Monday, with Navy holding a 6-4-0 advantage in the series … Navy is 3-2-0 when playing in Farmville, including winning the series opener, 2-1, on Oct. 23, 2007 and racking up another 2-1 victory in its last trip there on Sept. 18, 2019 … The most recent meeting in the series came last season on Sept. 14, as Navy captured a 2-0 victory in Annapolis with then-freshman Charlie Kriel scoring the game winner in the 65' and Sidney Paris adding an insurance tally at 75'.

Scouting the Lancers
Longwood comes into Tuesday's contest on the same streak as Navy, having tied their last two games … After throttling East Tennessee, 4-0, and falling at VMI by a 3-1 score in August, the Lancers had back-to-back 1-1 draws at William & Mary (Sept. 6) and American (Sept. 10) … Jose Carlos has been the main offensive threat for Longwood, notching three of the team's five goals, while Marco Magnoli paces the team with two assists in addition to his one goal … In net, Alexandre Durand has played all but nine minutes as the Longwood goalkeeper, posting 10 saves over the course of the first four games … Two of the Lancers' three All-Big South selections from last season are back for 2022, as midfielder Markus Gronli and defender Jonas Kalchner have both returned to the Longwood lineup.
