Women’s Tennis Earns a Pair of Wins in Spring Home Opener

Navy Moves to 2-2 with Victories Over Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A pair of wins for the Navy women's tennis team showed off the depth of the Midshipmen in their home opener, as Navy tallied identical 6-1 wins over Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure on Saturday morning at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

The Mids improved to 2-2 on the spring, while the Red Flash dropped to 1-2 this season and the Bonnies shifted to a 2-2 record in 2022-23.

On the day, freshman Sia Chaudry and sophomore Kate Lee were both able to go 2-0 in singles play, with Chaudry also going 1-0 in doubles action, while junior Samantha Johns racked up two doubles victories in her first action of the season.

Saturday marks the 19th doubleheader sweep for Navy in the last five seasons, including six two-win days last year.

Saint Francis Recap
Junior Corinne Farid partnered with freshman Hanna Elks Smith in the No. 3 doubles pairing to make short work of the Red Flash's Marie Discini and Nagisa Miyake, 6-0, to open the morning. The veteran No. 1 duo of sophomore Emily Tannenbaum and senior Casey Accola quickly followed that with a 6-4 win over the SFU combo of Bente Vandeputte and Dominique Yeo, securing the doubles point for Navy.

The Mids finished off the doubles sweep when Chaudry and Johns outlasted Anoek Pruijmboom and Valeria Vinces in a 7-6 (7-2) match on the second court.

Freshman Ellie Choate had an impressive singles debut at the No. 6 spot to extend Navy's lead, defeating Samantha Quezada, 6-1, 6-2, and Lee finished up her first win of the day one court over on No. 5, grabbing a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Miyake. The top court saw Tannenbaum clinch the Mids' first victory of the spring by beating Yeo in a 6-4, 6-1 decision, while sophomore Sylvia Eklund took care of business at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Pruijmboom.

Rounding out Navy's opening match, Chaudry got a 6-0, 6-4 victory on the second court against Vandeputte, but SFU got on the board when Vinces beat Smith by a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 score at the No. 4 spot.

With the victory, the Mids remain undefeated all-time against Saint Francis at 13-0.

St. Bonaventure Recap
Navy continued action later in the morning when it took the doubles point against the Bonnies, beginning when Eklund and Choate teamed up to defeat the visiting pairing of Amara Young and Kelly Barnes on the No. 3 court, 6-1.

The Mids clinched the point thanks to Tannenbaum and Johns picking up a 6-2 victory over Isabella Venter and Anastasia Gubanova at No. 1 doubles, while Farid and sophomore Parvathi Shanker partnered for a 6-4 win on the second court against Alexandra Jansson and Amelia Haley.

Lee was the opening salvo in five-straight singles wins for the Mids in the back half of the doubleheader, as the sophomore completed a perfect day with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Kashish Bote on the No. 5 court. Farid was next to finish, defeating Barnes by a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the No. 6 spot, while Chaudry closed out a 6-3, 6-2 victory on the No. 2 court against Haley to guarantee the team win for Navy.

Shanker added to the Navy lead by beating Venter at the fourth spot, 4-6, 6-4, 12-10, and Smith was the last of five-straight singles wins for the Mids when she edged Gubanova on the No. 4 court, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 12-10. Jansson was the lone Bonaventure victory, battling out a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-5 win against Accola at the No. 1 spot.
