Grady Griess Named NAAA Athlete Of The Week

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Following a pair of dominant performances in Navy wrestling's two victories over the weekend, junior heavyweight Grady Griess has been selected as this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman.

Griess opened the weekend by securing a Navy victory over Hofstra. With the Mids up 18-12 in the final bout of the dual, he shutout Zachary Knighton-Ward by a 6-0 decision to earn a 21-12 win over the Pride.

On Sunday, Navy trailed Binghamton 18-16 with the battle between Griess and 21st-nationally ranked Cory Day the deciding match in the dual. After the first two periods went scoreless, Griess went up 2-0 on a reversal with 1:39 left to score the first points of the match. He then took a 6-0 lead with a four-point near fall with 1:03 remaining and scored an additional point for finishing with 3:20 of riding time to win by a 7-0 decision.

Griess leads the nation in wins this season, owning a 25-4 overall record and a 6-1 dual record. He has allowed his opponents to score just 10 points in his last 12 matches and has claimed wins in 12 of his last 13. His victory over Day was his fourth over a nationally-ranked wrestler this season.

Navy wrestling continues its season this Friday with a matchup at Lock Haven in Lock Haven, Pa., at 7:00 p.m. The Mids then make a short trip to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
