Ferretti, Koser and Griess Crowned Champions At Franklin & Marshall Open

Lancaster, Pa. - For the second time this season, the Navy wrestling team (0-1) finished a tournament with three individual champions, as team captain Jacob Koser (197-pounds), Grady Griess (285-pounds) and Brendan Ferretti (133-pounds) all placed first at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday in Lancaster, Pa. Navy's three champions are the most ever won in a single Franklin & Marshall Open in Navy history and tied North Carolina for the most champions from one institution at this year's event.

Navy had won just four individual titles in its nine prior appearances and hadn't seen a champion since 2020. The Mids have now claimed seven titles at Franklin & Marshall Open, tied for the third most from one program in the tournament's ten year history.

Koser dominated all five opponents en route to a 5-0 performance to win his fifth career tournament title. He opened the tournament with a 17-2 (4:00) tech fall victory over Garrett Henigin of Air Force and then won his round of 16 match by fall in just 1:33. The senior used a major decision and decision to advance to the finals, where he defeated John Crawford of Franklin & Marshall by a 10-2 major decision. Koser's five victories in Lancaster give him 71 all-time, as he becomes the first Mid to surpass 70 career wins since Jared Prince ('20), who achieved the mark during the 2019-20 season.

The underdog story of the tournament came from Ferretti. The freshman entered the tournament with just 11 career matches wrestled and had only appeared in the Soldier Salute since suffering an injury in the Bearcat Open back on Nov. 13. Despite not having a lot of reps entering the tournament, the Macomb, Mich., native finished 5-0 to win his first career tournament title. Ferretti kicked off his day with a fall victory (4:52) and then won his next three matches by decision to earn a shot at his first championship. He fell behind to top-seeded Gabe Hixenbaugh of Campbell early on a takedown but scored the next four points to take a 4-2 lead into the final period. Ferretti allowed Hixenbaugh to score just one point on an escape in period three to win the match by a 4-3 decision.

Griess won his third tournament crown of the season and the fourth of his career after finishing a perfect 6-0. He advanced to the quarterfinals with back-to-back fall victories and then proceed to win his next two matches by 3-1 decisions to advance to the championship bout. Navy's heavyweight handled Tyrie Houghton of N.C. State with ease, winning by an 8-1 decision. Griess' six wins give him a team-leading 20 total this season, already surpassing his total from a year ago (19).

Joining Griess in placing in the heavyweight class was Ryan Catka, who finished the tournament 2-2 to place sixth. The sophomore made his second appearance of the season and had a pair of dominating wins. Catka defeated Dom Petracci of Drexel by a 23-9 major decision and Ethan Miller of Lock Haven by a 17-2 (5:00) tech fall for his two victories.

Navy will resume dual competition next weekend for the Virginia Duals Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14 in Hampton, Va. Navy will face South Dakota State at 11:30 a.m. and Virginia at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and then battle Kent State at 2:30 p.m. and Oklahoma at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
