Jack Tarzy (So / Medford, N.J.) shot a team-low 222 (75-74-73) to lead the Navy men's golf team to a 14th-place finish at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate held the last three days at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, N.C. The Mids, who shot their best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 306, finished the 54-hole tournament with an 81-over par 933 (310-317-306).
Tarzy led the way for the Mids for a third-consecutive tournament with his 25th-place finish. He improved his scores in each of the three rounds, closing out the competition on Tuesday with the team's lowest round at 2-over par 73.
Team captain
Benjamin Valdez (Jr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed 62nd with his 24-over par 237 (78-80-79), while
Luke Lombardo (Fr / Severna Park, Md.) opened the tournament with an 80 before finishing off with back-to-back 79s to finish a stroke behind Valdez in 66th.
Danny Auffant (Fr / Bellevue, Wash.) had a solid opening day with a 6-over par 77, but stumbled in the second round with a 13-over par 84. The rookie rallied to shoot a 78 in the final round and finish in 68th with a 26-over par 239. Rounding out the group was
Jack Teuschl (Fr / Oakton, Va.), who shot a 41-over par 254 (94-84-76) in his first-collegiate tournament. He made huge strides over the course of the tournament, shaving nearly 20 strokes off his score from the opening round to the final round.
Tournament Notes
• Drexel (290-285-279=854), the highest-ranked team in the field at #94, became the ninth different team in 13 years to claim the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate team title, posting a 13-stroke victory over second-place Old Dominion (289-294-284=867). The Dragons held an 8-stroke advantage over Old Dominion and East Carolina heading into the final round, but extended it by turning in a 5-under par 279 over the final 18 holes. It was the only round in which one of the 15 teams finished under par.
• Drexel had the top-two individual performances of the field, including Drue Nicholas who took individual medalist honors with his 6-under par 207 (71-67-69). Last year, he finished as the runner-up in the tournament. Meanwhile, teammate Griffin Mitchell placed second with his 4-under par 209 (68-71-70).
The Mids will conclude their fall season next week when they travel to Southampton, N.Y. to participate in the Veterans Intercollegiate played Monday and Tuesday at the Sebonack Golf Club.
