ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team wrapped up its fall regular season over the weekend with a pair of Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association championship events, with the two events helping to determine scheduling ranking for the coming year and concluding the doublehanded fleet racing fall season.
Held in Ithaca, N.Y., the War Memorial Regatta featured the top 18 teams in MAISA and began with light wind and relatively warm weather before a cold front came through one race in. After a period of rain, the regatta saw strong northerly wind and decreasing temperatures throughout the day on Saturday.
Navy got off to a strong start and battled for the lead for the first few sets of races before a few weaker races knocked the team to fourth overall after the first day, while the Midshipmen were ready to make a charge on Sunday but Cayuga Lake was glassy when the teams arrived, causing a long delay. After the delay, two races per division were completed before the cutoff, with Navy making the most of the opportunity. Posting four strong finishes and closing the gap on the leaders, the Mids moved into a tie for third overall with St. Mary's College, winning the tiebreak on head-to-head finishes. Junior
Ryan Wahba and sophomores
Nathan Smith and
Ellie Alex finished third in the "A" division, while seniors
Madeline Smith and
Hunter Anderson, sophomore
Jack Welburn and freshman
Henry Allgeier took fifth in the "B" division.
Racing at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., the MAISA Fall Women's Championship featured 14 teams this year. With the same cold front from Ithaca moving towards Kings Point, Saturday was very warm with a light wind that still allowed for sailing for part of the day, with six races being completed per division. Navy quickly established itself as one of the top four teams, as those four distanced themselves from the rest of the field early on. Finally getting the cold front, Sunday saw cold, rainy and windy conditions, as eight more races were completed per division. Navy fell off the pace of the other leaders on the second day and wound up taking fourth overall, as junior
Evie Blauvelt and senior
Julia Christie finished second in the "A" division while senior
Catherine Aitken, sophomore
Ava Farley and freshman
Josie Sherry placed fifth in the "B" division.
Navy concludes the fall season this upcoming weekend, heading to the ICSA Match Race Championship on Nov. 3-5 in Charleston, S.C., and the ICSA Singlehanded Championships on Nov. 4-5 in New Orleans, La.
