ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team concluded its run at the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championships on Saturday, finishing in 13th place in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Â
The women's event featured 36 teams split into two semifinal rounds to kick off the ICSA's Fleet Race Championships, as Navy was seeded into the western bracket, which sailed 420s on Friday and FJs on Saturday.
Â
The first day started out with a moderate northeast breeze that was puffy and shifty, but the breeze faded throughout the morning and eventually died off early afternoon. The breeze then filled from the northwest and built rapidly, but remained very puffy and shifty. The Midshipmen struggled with consistency in the rapidly changing conditions and found themselves sitting 14th at the end of Friday.
Â
Sunday began with a light easterly that slowly faded through the morning. After a short delay, the wind filled from the southwest, but never built like it had the day before, remaining under 10 knots and still shifty. The Mids had a few more bright spots on the second day, but couldn't quite do enough to advance to the finals.
Â
In the end, Navy finished 13th out of 18 teams, with seniors
Ava Farley and Ella Niehoff coming in 12th in the "A" division while juniors
Josie Sherry,
Kate Zurinskas and
Mary Dwyer and freshman
Jessica Green placed 13th in the "B" division.
