Fall Slate Ends for Men’s Tennis with Four Flight Wins

Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team closed the fall season by winning three singles flights and one doubles flight during the Navy Invitational held this weekend in Annapolis.

The event featured round-robin draws of players from Navy, Binghamton, Georgetown, Long Island, Niagara, Richmond and Temple.  The Mids as a team posted overall records of 24-15 in singles and 8-5 in doubles.

"The players received a lot of competitive opportunities with our many tournaments this fall," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "The freshman class has been impressive both on the court and in the classroom.  Our sophomores also steadily improved as the fall went on."

Each of Navy's singles flight winners this weekend recorded 3-0 records.

Luke Garner opened the weekend with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Georgetown's Sahil Morey.  He came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Niagara's Vid Maric in his middle match.  Garner capped the invite by tallying a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Alessandro Danna from Long Island.

Nathan Nguyen dropped only one set in winning his flight, and that loss came in his last match during a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) victory over Long Island's Leon Harder.  Prior to that match, he won identical 6-4, 6-2 decisions over Derek Raskopf of Georgetown and Binghamton's James McPherson.

Also losing just one set was Jason Kim.  He started the invite by defeating Georgetown's Pablo Burke, 6-2, 6-2, then recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win over Matthew Carlson from Binghamton.  Kim's tournament closed with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win over Niagara's Gurustat Singh Makkar.

Navy's doubles team of Aniketh Ayinala and J.J. Etterbeek won a pair of matches to win its flight.  The tandem first posted a 6-3 win against Richmond's Dylan Atkinson and Sebastian Miano, then defeated Niagara's Manuel Alonso and Makkar by the score of 6-1.

Navy's spring season begins with a pair of matches at Penn on January 19.
