MANHEIM, Pa. - The Navy wrestling team is ranked 19th in the nation in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I Top 25 poll, which was announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Mids earned a national ranking for the first time since Feb. 23, 2021, when they were ranked No. 17 in the final poll of the 2020-21 season.
Â
Navy owns a 4-0 record and is one of only three teams (North Carolina; N.C. State) in the top 25 poll with four wins this season. The Mids followed up their upset victory against then No. 23 Illinois (23-18) with three wins on Sunday at the Navy Quad Meet. Head coach
Cary Kolat's squad shut out Morgan State, 39-0, and then routed VMI, 40-6. Navy won 19 of the 20 bouts in the two duals and claimed bonus points in nine. The highlight win for the Mids came in the final matchup against then No. 16 Pitt. Navy reigned victorious in six bouts, four of which were against nationally-ranked wrestlers to win the contest, 21-12.
Â
The Mids have won six-straight duals dating back to last season. Navy's current win streak is its longest since it opened the 2016-17 campaign with six-consecutive victories.
Â
Seven Mids received a national ranking in their respective weight class in the latest InterMat rankings. Team captain
Grady Griess (285) was bumped up to No. 10 in the nation. Griess is the first Navy wrestler to climb into the top 10 since Cody Trybus (141) earned ninth in the nation prior to the 2021 NCAA Championship. The Grand Island, Neb., native is also the highest nationally-ranked wrestler in the EIWA. The additional ranked Mids include No. 12
Brendan Ferretti (133), No. 18
Josh Koderhandt (141), No. 24
Andrew Cerniglia (165), No. 30
Danny Wask (174) and No. 16
David Key (184).
Â
Navy will take a break from duals to host the 45th annual Navy Classic on Saturday at 9 a.m. The tournament will be held at McDonough School in Owings Mills, Md.
