Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Mids Unable to Counter Early Colgate Run

HAMILTON, N.Y. // The Colgate men's lacrosse team (1-3, 1-1 Patriot League) used a 10-0 run in the first and second quarters to break free from Navy (3-4, 0-2 Patriot League) and went on to capture a 17-8 victory over the Midshipmen Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium. Second-year Colgate attackman Rory Connor scored a career-high 7 goals, including 5 during the Raiders' run.

"I am embarrassed by our performance today. The uninspired effort is my fault," said fourth-year Navy head coach Joe Amplo. "As a staff, we have to evaluate all of the decisions we have made and try to quickly adjust our course. Navy lacrosse should not look like it did today and it is our responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen again."

Navy jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage on goals by Max Hewitt (M / Jr / Denver, Colo.) and Carter Ash (A / So / Leesburg, Va.) before the Raiders responded with 6 unanswered goals by 5 different players to close out the first frame with a 6-2 lead. Connor became a one-man wrecking crew for the Raiders, scoring 4-consecutive goals to push Colgate's lead to 8 (10-2).

After a nearly 18-minute scoring drought, the Mids got a pair of goals from Hewitt and Jon Jarosz (M / Jr / Gambrills, Md.) to close to within 6. Colgate, however, would get the final say of the half when second-year middie Ben Trumble fired in his second goal on a 15-yard crank shot to give the Raiders an 11-4 lead at the break.

The two teams exchanged goals over the first 10 minutes of the third quarter before the Raiders scored the final 2 to take a 15-7 lead into the fourth.

Colgate scored the first 2 goals of the final frame before the Mids closed out the game with a pole goal by Zach Snider (LSM / Sr / Drexel Hill, Pa.) that was sparked by a caused turnover on the defensive end of the field by Jackson Bonitz (Jr / Shrewsbury, Pa.).

Ash, Hewitt and Jarosz led Navy in the scoring column with 2 goals apiece, while rookie Race Ripley (A / Annapolis, Md.) made his first appearance of the season and contributed a pair of assists.

Anthony Ghobriel (So / Dallas, Texas) won 18 of the 28 draws (.642) in the game and picked up 5 ground balls for the Mids.

Three Navy goalkeepers combined for just 4 saves in the contest.

Led by Connor's 7 goals, eight different Colgate players targeted shots, while Michael Minicus tallied 6 points on a goal and a team-high 5 assists. Meanwhile, goalie Matt Lacombe made 21 saves for the Raiders and gave up 8 goals.

Navy returns to action next Friday when it plays host to #11 Johns Hopkins at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 pm with live coverage on ESPN+ and WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM.
