Navy Quick Hits
• Storied Rivalry Returns to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium: Navy and Johns Hopkins have met 91 times on the lacrosse field in what is one of the top-15 most-played series in the history of the sport. The two programs met every year from 1950 to 2017 before the annual game was put on hold due to scheduling conflicts after Johns Hopkins joined the Big Ten Conference. The two schools were scheduled to play on March 14, 2020, but the worldwide pandemic struck and the season was shut down on the eve of the game. The pandemic once again hindered the efforts of playing in 2021. The two played one another for the first time since Feb. 7, 2017, when
Max Hewitt scored the game's final 2 goals to lead the Midshipmen to an 11-10 victory over Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field in Baltimore last March. Friday's contest will mark the first time the two teams have met at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis since Feb. 9, 2016, when the Blue Jays won a 12-11 double-overtime thriller against the Midshipmen.
• Historic Programs on Display: Johns Hopkins and Navy are two of the sport's oldest and most successful programs. Johns Hopkins' program was established in 1883 and is recognized as the oldest in Div. I now in its 136th season. Johns Hopkins is also the winningest, having amassed a 1,009-367-15 record, and is the only program to reach 1,000 wins. Navy is in its 116th year (fifth oldest) and boasts an 825-379-14 record (fifth-most wins). Johns Hopkins and Navy are among only five programs (Syracuse, Maryland, Army) in Div. I who have won 800 or more games.
• Arline Runs the "X": Xavier Arline's (Jr / A) role on the Navy lacrosse team is comparable to that as a quarterback on the Mids' football team - the offense runs through him on both fields of play. After seeing action in just 6 games a year ago and producing 8 points (5G, 3A), Arline is Navy's leading scorer through 7 games this season where he has amassed 21 points on 8 goals and a team-best 13 assists. He stands 28th in the country in assists per game (1.86).
• Haley Settles In, Eyes Rookie Mark: Last spring,
Henry Tolker (So / A) was the team's fourth-leading scorer as a rookie with 34 points (23G, 11A) and became just the 14th freshman in program history to reach 30 points. Starting attackman
Mac Haley is off to a solid start to the season and with at least 8 more games to play, he, too, has that 30-point milestone within his sights. Haley is second on the team in scoring with 15 points on 10 goals and 5 assists. He has points in 6 of the 7 contests this season, including multiple points in 4 games.
• Bonitz, Snider Among Navy's All-Time Caused Turnover Leaders: In the Mids' game at High Point on Feb. 25, All-American
Jackson Bonitz (Jr / D) moved into the top 10 on Navy's all-time caused turnovers list, while
Zach Snider (Sr / LSM) added his named to the top 20. With 37-career takeaways, Bonitz is tied with Michael Hirsch (2008-11) for seventh. Bonitz needs 8 caused turnover to tie Austin Miller (2010-13) for sixth and 10 to move into the top 5. Snider is tied with Alex Heyward (2012-15) for 17th on the list with 22 takeaways in his 4 seasons. He is just 2 away from tying former teammate Nick Franchuk (2018-21) and Hiram Carter (2015-18) for 15th. Meanwhile, second-year starter
Nick LiCalzi (Jr / D) is just 2 away from joining the top 20, as he owns 17 takeaways. Bonitz leads the team in caused turnovers this season with 9, while Snider has 8 and LiCalzi owns 3.
