Griess, Key and Koser Advance At 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championship

TULSA, Okla. - Three of Navy's five NCAA Championship qualifiers secured a win during the first day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championship in Tulsa, Okla. Grady Griess (285), David Key (184) and Jacob Koser (197) finished day one with a 1-1 record to secure an opportunity to wrestle in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes tomorrow. The three can still place as high as third in their respective weight classes.

As a team, Navy is tied for 45th of 67 teams with two points.

Griess was Navy's lone wrestler to win in session one. The junior shut out Oklahoma's 20th-ranked Josh Heindselman by a 3-0 decision in the opening round. Griess scored on an escape 10 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. A second stalling call against Heindselman put Griess ahead 2-0 with 47 seconds to go in the match. Griess stayed on top of Heindselman for the remainder of the contest and added another point by securing over a minute of riding time to win by a 3-0 decision.

Griess battled fifth-ranked Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force in the round of 16 but fell by a 14-1 major decision to send him into the consolation bracket.

Navy's heavyweight will face 16th-ranked Tate Orndorff of Ohio State in the second round of the consolation bracket during session three tomorrow.

Key fell behind 2-0 after surrendering a takedown in his first match of the championship against 10th-ranked Hunter Bolen of Virginia Tech. Key answered with a pair of escapes over the next two periods to tie the match 2-2 entering the third. Key did all he could to keep Bolen secured but Bolen managed to score an escape with 1:11 remaining in the match to go ahead, 3-2. The escape would be the difference maker for Bolen to win by a 3-2 decision.

Key also had a frustrating start in his next match against 22nd-ranked Dylan Connell of Illinois. Connell scored four points on a takedown and a two-point near fall to gain a 4-0 advantage with 1:18 remaining in the opening period. Key got on the scoreboard with an escape with 45 seconds left in the first to make the score, 4-1. He then scored a crucial takedown with just two seconds left on the clock to get back within a point heading into period two.

Key tied the match with another escape just 12 seconds into the second period and scored his second takedown with 49 seconds remaining to take a 6-4 lead.

Connell attempted to score an escape by choosing the down position to begin period three but Key kept him flat on the mat to maintain a two-point lead. A second stalling call against Connell added another point for Key to take a 7-4 lead with 28 seconds left in the match. Key capped off an 8-0 scoring run by securing riding time to win the match by an 8-4 decision.

Key will face a familiar foe in the second round of the consolation bracket, Drexel's 25th-ranked Brian Bonino. Key and Bonino faced each other twice at the EIWA Championship and both claimed a win. Bonino defeated Key by a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals but Key avenged the loss with an 8-3 decision victory in the third-place bout.

Koser wasn't able to pull off a first-round upset against Lehigh's fifth-ranked Michael Beard, falling by an 11-1 major decision.

Virginia Tech's 23-ranked Andy Smith took a 2-0 lead 13 seconds into period two of the consolation matchup but Koser would strike for the next six points in the contest. Navy's team captain earned his first point on an escape before taking his first lead by scoring a takedown with 18 seconds remaining in period two.

Smith gave Koser a free escape to being period three to put Koser ahead, 4-2. Koser scored his second takedown of the contest with 46 seconds left in the match to build his lead to four points. Smith scored a reversal with under 10 seconds to go in the match but Koser didn't surrender any additional points to win by a 6-4 decision.

Koser will battle sixth-ranked Isaac Trumble of N.C. State in session three tomorrow.

Brendan Ferretti (133) fell in his opening match to 14th-ranked Jesse Mendez of Ohio State by a 12-4 major decision.

The loss set up a matchup with conference foe Angelo Rini of Columbia. Ferretti tied the match 2-2 with a reversal at the 2:37 mark of the first period but Rini would go on to score six points over the remainder of the period to build an 8-2 lead. Both wrestlers scored two points in the second period, making the score 10-4 heading into the third. Ferretti got back within two points after scoring five points on an escape and two takedowns but a reversal by Rini with eight seconds to go would be the deciding factor. Rini scored an additional point by winning riding time to defeat Ferretti by a 14-9 decision.

Josh Koderhandt (141) also fell in the first round to an Ohio State wrestler. The sophomore lost to 16th-ranked Dylan D'Emilio by a 10-1 major decision.

The loss sent him into the consolation bracket to face Maryland's 31st-ranked Kal Miller. Miller scored first on a reversal 27 seconds into the second period. Koderhandt got on the board with an escape with 31 seconds remaining before a penalty against Miller tied the match. Miller was called for an illegal hold with eight seconds left in the period, tying the match 2-2 heading into the third.

Koderhandt took the lead with an escape 13 seconds into the final period but a takedown by Miller with 19 seconds to go put Koderhandt in a 4-3 deficit. Navy's 141-pounder was unable to score in the final moments and Miller secured riding time to defeat Koderhandt by a 5-3 decision.
