Navy Wrestling Concludes Competition At NCAA Championship

TULSA, Okla. - The 2022-23 season concluded for the Navy wrestling team on Friday at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championship in Tulsa, Okla. David Key (184), Jacob Koser (197) and Grady Griess (285) fell in their session three matches to end Navy's season.

Key began Navy's day with his third matchup of the season against Drexel's 25th-ranked Brian Bonino. Key was awarded a takedown at the 1:53 mark of the first period, but Drexel challenged the takedown call. The officials reversed their original decision and awarded no takedown to Key, resetting the score to 0-0.

Key still scored the first point of the match on an escape eight seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Bonino tied the match 1-1 with an escape of his own in the third period, sending the match into sudden victory. Bonino got a hold of Key's leg in overtime and sent him to the ground to score a takedown and defeat Key by a 3-1 decision.

Key ends his junior year with a career-high 20 wins, five of which came against nationally ranked wrestlers.

Koser put sixth-ranked Isaac Trumble of N.C. State in a big hole in the opening period. Koser built a 6-0 lead on a takedown and four-point near fall less than two minutes into the contest. Trumble responded with a reversal to get on the board with 29 seconds left in the first to make the score 6-2.

Trumble got back within two points after scoring a takedown 32 seconds into the second period. Koser answered with a reversal with 42 seconds remaining to regain a four-point advantage. Trumble would score another late reversal with only 22 seconds remaining in the second period to make the score 8-6 heading into the third.

Koser chose to start the third in the down position to try and score an escape, but Trumble held him down to stay within two points. Koser was called for his second stalling penalty with only 16 seconds to go in the match to make the score 8-7. Trumble added the tying point by securing over a minute of riding time to send the match into sudden victory tied 8-8.

Trumble would score a takedown 25 seconds into sudden victory to win the match by a 10-8 decision.
Koser ends his career at Navy with an 80-35 overall record. He is the first Mid to reach 80 victories since Nicholas Gil won his 80th match in 2018. Navy's team captain posted a 27-12 dual record and defeated 10 nationally ranked wrestlers over his four-year career.

He also won four tournament championships and placed seventh in his respective weight class at the 2022 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

The senior finished with a 4-2 record in his career against Army and won three of his four matches in the Army-Navy Star Match.

Griess stepped onto the mat next as Navy's last man standing in the championship for a battle with 16th-ranked Tate Orndorff of Ohio State. Orndorff took a 2-0 lead on a takedown with 54 seconds left in the first period. Griess earned an escape 30 seconds later to make the score 2-1 after the first three minutes.

Orndorff gained a 3-1 advantage after scoring an escape nine seconds into the second period and held Griess scoreless over the remainder of the contest. Orndorff was awarded an additional point by securing riding time to defeat Griess by a 4-1 decision.

Griess ends the year as Navy's leader in total wins (32) and dual wins (nine). He became the 50th wrestler in Navy history to reach 30 victories in a season and the first Mid to achieve the mark since Michael Coleman (34) and Gil (32) did so in the 2017-18 season.

His breakout season included tournament titles at the Clarion Open, Bearcat Open, Franklin & Marshall Open and the EIWA Championship. He won Navy's 99th individual EIWA title in its history. He also concluded the season with a team-leading eight wins against nationally ranked opponents, three of which came during his EIWA title run.
