WILLIAMSBURG, Va. //  Chip Deegan (Fr / Newport Beach, Calif.) shot a 6-under par 65 in the second round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate to help propel him to the top of the leader board, while the Navy men's golf team is positioned second going into Tuesday's final round. Navy shot a 3-under par 281, the low round of the tournament, in the afternoon session to make the jump from eighth to second by day's end.

Navy opened the day with an 11-over par 295, but immediately began to turn the corner once the second round began. In fact, nearly half the field improved their scores over the second 18 holes on Monday. Navy (295-281=576) will head into the final round trailing Fairleigh Dickinson (288-285=573) by just 3 strokes, while the Mids own a 2-stroke advantage over Princeton (288-290=578) and Longwood (289-289=578), who are tied for third. Towson, who won last year's tournament, opened the day in second place, but fell back to sixth in the stands and is 12 over (287-293=580).

Navy recorded 29 birdies on the day with Deegan pacing the field of 84 competitors with his 13 birdies. In the first round, Deegan birdied 5 holes, but went on to bogey 4 holes and double-bogey once en route to a 1-over par 72. The second round was smooth sailing for the rookie who posted 8 birdies to just a pair of bogeys en route to his 65, the low round in the tournament. Deegan heads into Tuesday's final round with a 2-stroke lead over second-place Pyae Phyo Thu (71-68=139) of Fairleigh Dickinson.

Meanwhile, Keegan Shreves (Sr / Potomac, Md.) and Jack Tarzy (Fr / Medford, N.J.) mirrored one another's scores, opening the day with a 2-over par 73 before shooting par in the second round to finish the day 2-over and in 17th place.

Benjamin Valdez (So / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) is in 49th with a 9-over par 151 (77-74), while Owen Huntington (So / Camas, Wash.) is 79th with a 22-over par 164 (85-79). Braxton Tracy (Sr / Huntersville, N.C.), who is competing as an individual, turned in a 13-over par 155 (80-75).
