Offshore Sailing Closes Out Coast Guard Spring Invitational

Navy Placed Ninth at the Regatta in its Penultimate Event of Spring Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team completed its penultimate regatta of the spring on Sunday, finishing ninth at the Coast Guard Spring Invitational on the Thames River in New London, Conn.

Struggling early on Saturday, the Midshipmen were able to collect themselves late in the day and took third in two races, ending the first day seventh overall in the nine-team field. Despite the strong finish on Saturday, the team struggled again to open Sunday, as six more races were conducted where the Mids had difficulty adapting as conditions changed, consequently dropping back to ninth place as competition wrapped up.

In their first competition in their respective roles and aboard J/70s, junior skipper Ian Mason along his crew of juniors Sydney Richardson and Cam Coffelt and sophomore Nick Gibbons came home with a bunch of lessons learned.

Next up for Navy offshore sailing team is the Navy Sailing Race to the Lighthouses on April 29.
