WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 4 Navy lightweight rowing team had a dominant day of action on Saturday as the Mids swept a three-race series against the No. 5 Georgetown Hoyas. Racing on a 2,000-meter stretch of the Potomac River, the Mids handily defeated the Hoyas in all three races by four or more seconds.

Racing in reverse order, Navy's third and fourth varsity eight crews led off the contest by taking on Georgetown's third boat. The Mids' duo took control early and found themselves in a two-boat race down the stretch. In an upset, Navy's 4V knocked off its brethren in the 3V by 1.9 seconds, 6:10.8 to 6:12.7. Georgetown's 3V entry was well off the pace back in third at 6:19.3.

The second varsity crews went head-to-head next in the closest Navy-Georgetown matchup of the day. The Mids set the pace early and quickly started moving out seats on the Hoyas. At the conclusion of the 2,000 meters, Navy was victorious by 4.1 seconds, 6:15.4 to 6:19.5.

In the final race of the meet with the Forster Cup on the line, the Mids easily took care of the hosts to retain the trophy. Putting together a complete race Navy jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as it grabbed a 5.8-second victory over Georgetown, 6:02.5 to 6:08.3.

"Especially after last season's close racing at the IRA, we know that each year we have to bring our best when we line up against Georgetown, especially on the Potomac," remarked head coach
Shawn Bagnall. "I was happy for the 1V in that they had a complete piece, and were more composed through the "tighter" moments in the race. The 2V had a nice piece as well. The 4V started the day by helping keep the coaches busy upending their 3V counterparts; kudos to that group. Clearly these lineups will continue to evolve heading into the Eastern Sprints.

"We are always humbled and honored to race for the JJ Forster Cup, named for an outstanding US Marine, Purple Heart Recipient, Georgetown Coach, and US National Rowing Team member. I know our guys appreciate the special meaning that this race has to it, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to race for this annual cup with the Hoyas. Semper Fi."

Navy will be back on the road next Saturday with a three-team regatta in Boston against Harvard and Delaware. The Mids and Crimson will be racing for the Haines Trophy.
