GAINESVILLE, Va. // The Navy men's golf team placed three individuals in the top five, including medalist
Keegan Shreves (Sr / Potomac, Md.), en route to a tournament-leading 64-over par 1360 at the inaugural Commander-In-Chief's Cup held Monday and Tuesday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va.
Army (454-448-458=1360) held a 9-stroke advantage over Navy (450-461-449=1360) heading into the final round, however, the Mids shot their low round of the tournament (+17, 449) over the final 18 holes to pull even with the Black Knights. While the best six of eight scores over each of the three rounds were used in the team-scored event, the seventh-best score in round three (80 A / 82 N) was used to break the tie between Army and Navy. Air Force, meanwhile, placed third with a 77-over par 1373.
Shreves played a superb tournament that saw him take the lead after the second round with a 1-under par 143 (71-72). He held a 3-stroke advantage over Air Force's Isaac Layne who led after the opening round with a 2-under par 70, but paired it with a 4-over par 76 in the second to slip to second going into the final round.
Though Shreves' shot a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday, he actually extended his lead and claimed individual medalist honors for the first time in his career.
Shreves claimed a 5-stroke win over Layne, Army's Joshua Kim and teammate
Chip Deegan (Fr / Newport Beach, Calif. / 74-78-71=223) who made the jump from eight to second thanks to a 1-under par 71 in the final round. Deegan had four birdies on Tuesday, including three over the final eight holes.
Benjamin Valdez (So / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed fifth for the Mids with a 9-over par 225 (71-79-75), while
Jack Tarzy (Fr / Medford, N.J.) played a sensational final 18 holes that saw him turn in a tournament-low tying 70 and make the move from 16th to sixth in the final standings (75-82-70=227). The rookie had an eagle on the 14th hole and birdied on the 17th to bring him to 3-under, but a bogey on the 18th kept him from a sub-70.
Owen Huntington (So / Camas, Wash.) tied for 13th with a 17-over par 233 (79-77-77),
Derek Weaver (Fr / Hackettstown, N.J.) shot a 19-over par 235 (80-74-81) in his first-collegiate appearance and
Noah Nuez (So / Laveen, Ariz. / 85-81-82) and
Braxton Tracy (Sr / Huntersville, N.C. / 82-81-85) tied for 21st with a 32-over par 248.
The Mids will use the next week to prepare for the Patriot League Championship which is slated to be played April 28-30 at the Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Md.
