LEWISBURG, Pa. // The Navy men's lacrosse team (8-7 / 5-3 Patriot League) used a 4-1 run over the final 13 minutes of the game to earn a 12-9 victory against Bucknell (3-10 / 2-6 Patriot League) Friday evening at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa. The win, the Mids' seventh in a row against the Bison, secured the No. 4 seed and a home game for Navy Tuesday evening (7:00 pm) against fifth-seeded Loyola in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Mids fell behind 3-0 early in the game, but clawed their way back by scoring 3 of the next 4 goals to close the opening period down by just one (4-3). The two teams went on to target just 1 goal each in the second frame with the Bison holding a 5-4 advantage at the break.
Sam Dracobly (M / Sr / Seattle, Wash.) evened the game at 5 apiece with his goal just 59 seconds into the second half and sparked a 3-0 run to give the Mids' their first lead of the game at 7-5.
Following a called timeout by Bucknell, the Bison scored back-to-back goals, including a pole goal by John Young (LSM / Fr) to level the game at 7 with 2:53 to go in the third quarter. Navy, though, would get the final say of the frame when
Xavier Arline (A / Jr / Wading River, N.Y.) set up behind the cage and found fellow attackman
Henry Tolker (A / So / Catonsville, Md.) on the crease for the goal.
Bucknell tied the game (8-8) once again when Jack Dudas (M / So) fired in his lone goal of the game as he was falling to the ground at the 13:48 mark.
Arline scored back-to-back goals 30 seconds apart - an unassisted goal by Arline on a wrap-around goal off a restart and an unassisted goal by Tolker from 10 yards out - to take the lead for good.
Bucknell briefly interrupted the Mids momentum when Feda intercepted a
Pat Ryan (GK / Sr / Groton, Mass.) clearing pass just a foot away and dumped in his shot to pull within one.
The Mids, however, answered with two in a row by
Mac Haley (A / Fr / Shady Side, Md.) and Arline to capture the win.
Arline, who led Navy with 6 points on a career-high 4 goals and 2 assists, was one of 7 players to score for the Mids, while
Jon Jarosz (M / Jr / Gambrills, Md.) and Tolker contributed 2 goals apiece.
Defensively, the Mids forced 10 of Bucknell's 15 turnovers, including
Zach Snider (LSM / Sr / Drexel Hill, Pa.), who recorded a career-high 3 takeaways in the win. Meanwhile, All-American
Jackson Bonitz (D / Jr / Shrewsbury, Pa.) became only the fifth player in program history to reach the 50 caused turnover milestone.
AJ Hernandez (D / Fr / Dayton, Md.) also closed to within one of the record for most caused turnovers by a freshman, as he now has 12 on the year.
After giving up 3 goals on 4 shots in the opening minutes of the game, Ryan orchestrated a defensive stand that allowed just 6 goals over the remaining 55 minutes. Ryan made 14 saves in the contest and eclipsed the 300-save mark for his career.
Perhaps the best stat line of the evening was that of
Anthony Ghobriel (So / Dallas, Texas), who dominated the faceoff game. He won 19 of the 24 draws he took and picked up a career-high 12 ground balls. It's the second time this season (High Point) that he's won 19 faceoffs, a mark that is tied for the sixth most in school history. Additionally, Ghobriel has quietly and steadily inched his way towards the Navy single-season record, needing just 5 faceoff wins to tie the record (173) set by Chris Pieczonka in 2004.
Six players accounted for Bucknell's 9 goals, including Jack Feda who benefitted from a couple of fortuitous bounces that led to a hat trick. Meanwhile, Bison leading scorer Dutch Furlong, who came into the game ranked #9 nationally in points per game (5.00) and #3 is assists per game, was held to just a single assist by Bonitz.
With 8 of the 9 teams in action Friday evening, the Patriot League Tournament field and seeding has been set. Boston U. defeated Army 12-11 in West Point to earn the No. 1 seed, while Army is the No. 2. Both teams will have an opening-round bye. Meanwhile, Lehigh scored a 15-9 victory over Loyola to lay claim to the No. 3 seed and will play host to No. 6 seed Lafayette on Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
The Mids, meanwhile, earned the No. 4 seed and will play host to fourth-seeded Loyola on Tuesday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried live on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and
Joe Miller on the call.
