Penn Edges Navy in Callow Cup Battle

Quakers hold off Mids by 1.8 seconds in V8 contest

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In the regular season finale for the Navy lightweight rowing team, the Mids were challenged throughout their three-race series against the Penn Quakers on Saturday morning at home. In a matchup on the Severn River between the No. 6 Mids and No. 7 Quakers, the road squad earned victories in the final two races and came away with the Callow Cup and 1919 Team Points Trophy.

Racing on a 2,000-meter stretch of the Severn, the third varsity eight event kicked off the action on Saturday. In a Navy-heavy field, the Mids' third and fourth varsity crews were the class of the race and finished one-two with respective times of 6:03.0 and 6:05.3. Penn's third varsity crew crossed the finish line 2.4 seconds back at 6:07.7. Racing as an additional guest, Navy's fifth varsity posted a time of 6:23.6.

Next up, the Quakers evened the series at one race a piece with a victory in the second varsity eight contest. Penn controlled the majority of the action and earned a 6.4-second margin of victory, 5:53.3 to 5:59.7.

With the Callow Cup on the line for the first varsity eight and the 1919 Team Points Trophy lying in the balance, the spectators along the Severn were treated to an ultra-competitive final race of Saturday's series. The top crews were in stroke throughout most of the 2,000 meters before Penn slowly pulled away at the end to secure the victory by 1.8 seconds, 5:44.5 to 5:46.3.

"This was yet another hard-fought race by our athletes today," remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. "That was some great racing by both Penn and Navy. I think the feeling in the boat bay is that we are a spark here or there away from being the boats that we know we have the capacity to be. We are excited to hit our academic finals, and use the two weeks between now and the Eastern Sprints to find those sparks. Hold fast, Go Navy!"

Postseason action for the Mids begins in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday, May 14 with the Eastern Sprints.
