Seven Crews Compete for Offshore Sailing at the Race to the Lighthouses

Navy’s DEFIANCE Takes First Place in its Class and First Overall in the Fleet

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team had all seven of its crews compete in the Race to the Lighthouses, held Saturday on the Chesapeake Bay as the conditions for competition turned out far better than initially expected with decent wind holding for the entire race.
 
Navy's top-performing PHRF A2 boat was DEFIANCE, skippered by junior Phil Pacheco, finishing first place in its class and first overall in the fleet. Pacheco's crew included juniors Dylan Medina and Frank Carter, sophomore Ethan Sullivan and freshmen Kai Widick, Matt Irving, Eva White and Kaili Williams. Finishing fourth in the same class, INTEGRITY was skippered by junior Aiden Johnson, while junior Pat Fisher skippered AVENGER to a fifth-place finish.
 
In PHRF A0, the top Navy finisher was junior Rick Irving skippering CHAOS to second place in its class. Taking third in the class was POSEIDON, skippered by junior Rowan Suarez, while fourth place was WAHOO, skippered by senior Maddy Ploch, and fifth place was KODIAK, skippered by junior Javi Jiminez-Kane.
 
Next up for Navy is the 500-mile Annapolis to Newport Race in June.
