Navy Lightweights to Have Two Boats Race in Championship Finals Sunday

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The first varsity eight boat for the Navy lightweight rowing team advanced to the Grand Final Friday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.  The Mids will race for the Gold Medal Sunday morning thanks to their second-place showing today.

The first varsity eight entry will join Navy's second varsity eight boat in competing for championship on Sunday.

Additionally, the team's varsity four boat placed third in its time trial race Friday morning and was slated to compete Friday afternoon in the A/B semifinal.  However, poor weather forced the postponement of the race until Saturday.

First Varsity Eight
The Mids placed second of four teams in their semifinal to qualify for Sunday's Grand Final (10:20 a.m.).  Navy posted a time of 5:49.666 to finish six seconds in back of heat-winner Harvard (5:43.226) and 1.7 seconds in front of third-place finishing Yale (5:51.370).

Second Varsity Eight
The full field of seven entrants were guaranteed a berth in Sunday's final (9:30 a.m.), making today's race a chance to compete and determine lane selection for the race in two days.  Navy recorded a time of 6:00.816 to place sixth in Friday's race.

Varsity Four
The 10 entered boats competed in a head race time trial (one boat launches at a time) to determine semifinal assignments.  Navy's boat completed the course in a time of 6:25.789 to finish in third place.  Georgetown won the race in a time of 6:21.789 and Princeton edged the Mids for second place by six-tenths of a second (6: 25.195.
