SPARKS, Md. — Following three days of intense tryouts featuring nearly 100 of the best women's lacrosse players in the country, head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has named 42 players to the 2024 U.S. Women's U20 Training Team. Navy's
Maggie DeFabio (Summit, N.J.) was among the 42 players selected to the team.
DeFabio concluded her rookie campaign as one of Navy's top-performing freshmen. She played in all 19 games during the season, starting in 18 contests. The Summit, N.J. native finished the season in the top five on the team in points (3rd), goals (4th), assists (2nd), game-winning goals (2nd), and free-position goals (5th). DeFabio recorded 45 points on 33 goals and 12 assists with 20 ground balls, 10 draw controls, and nine caused turnovers. She registered 10 multi-score games, including six hat tricks. DeFabio was credited with three game-winning goals – Oregon, Colgate, and American; while also notching five free-position goals.
The 42 players named to the training team come from high schools from 12 states and the District of Columbia and represent 19 colleges with their current enrollment or commitment.
The U20 training team will be back at USA Lacrosse for a training camp in August and will compete at the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic in October before the final roster is ultimately selected to represent the country at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China next summer.
Formerly, a U19 event, World Lacrosse raised the age group to U20 after the 2019 championship in Peterborough, Ontario. Amonte Hiller was the head coach for the 2019 team and helped lead the U.S. to its fifth gold medal in the event. The U.S won the event in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2019. Australia won the inaugural championship in 1995 and Canada won in 2015 with the U.S. finishing as the runner-up at those two events.
