ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy offshore sailing team had two crews competing at the Shipyard Cup Regatta in Boothbay Harbor, Maine this past weekend, taking first and fifth in their class.
Â
Sailing in a variety of challenging conditions over the weekend, the Mids continually tested their skills including racing through dense fog.
Â
Senior skipper Javier Jimenez-Kane led his crew aboard KODIAK to first place out of eight boats in Performance Division 1 over the four-race series. Kane's crew included senior XO
Kit Oney, seniors
Cam Coffelt and
Casey Quijano, juniors Chris Cordner,
Ulysses Buzan, Gus Reed, Inaku Romero-Garza and Finn Prescott and sophomores Chad Schaffner, Sean Cain, Olivia Schuchard, Zach Peterson, Ed Konjoyan and Graham Rose.
Â
Fellow senior skipper Maddy Ploch led her crew to fifth place in the same class aboard WAHOO, as the second Navy crew had a strong regatta going until they suffered a sail failure just before the final race, causing them to miss the race and take a last place score.
Â
The crews departed Boothbay on Sunday evening bound for Sea Cliff, N.Y., where the Mids will compete in the Around Long Island Race starting Thursday.
