HAMILTON, N.Y. – In its first competition of the season, the Navy men's cross country team used pack scoring to finish second overall at the Harry Lang Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids placed each of its top seven runners in the top 25 in the 6K race with six finishing in the top 15.
Syracuse claimed the team title, finishing with 23 total points. Navy was second with 41 points, while Buffalo came in third with a team score of 75. Bucknell (89) and meet-host Colgate (167) rounded out the top five, while Binghamton (195), Cornell (199), Lafayette (206), and Lehigh (285) closed out the team scoring.
"It's too early to count any man or team in or out from this weekend's results, but it was a race, and the men we put on the line today leveled up from where they were last year," head coach
Aaron Lanzel stated after the meet. "I wasn't surprised to see Jackson challenging through the whole race from his recent training. Luke, Nico, Matt, Carson, and Sam all had an cross country experience that should give them confidence for their ability to compete as a team as the stakes will rapidly increase from here on in."
Sophomore
Jackson Nguyen clocked a time of 19:07.4 to finish fourth overall. He as followed by junior
Luke Nester who posted a time of 19:21.7 to come in seventh. The Mids claimed the ninth, 10th, 11th, and 12th as junior
Nico Valdivieso (19:25.8), sophomore
Matt Newell (19:35.1), junior
Carson Sloat (19:38.9), and senior
Sam Moultrie (19:40.0) finished in order. Senior
Joe Reimann rounded out Navy's top seven with a time of 19:47.8 to finish in 21st.
Three freshmen –
Owen Ahten (19:59.9);
Max Girardet (20:22.5); and Nicholas Hamby (20:50.5) – along with sophomore
Griffin House (20:32.4) and junior
Greyson Gravitt (20:34.4) closed out the meet for the Midshipmen.
The Midshipmen return to action next weekend as the Mids will host the annual Navy Invitational at the USNA Cross Country Course on Saturday, Sept. 9. The meet opens with an open 5K at 9:15 a.m. before the women's 6K at 10:00 a.m. and the men's 4.9-mile run at 10:30 a.m. There will be an alumni Bertha mile run at 11:00 a.m.
