ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following a pair of tough road results in Patriot League action this past week, the Navy women's soccer team got back in the win column in a loud manner on Monday with a 11-0 victory over Marymount University in a non-conference tilt at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Mids (6-3-3) showcased a deep and potent attack throughout the game versus the Saints (1-7-2) as they tallied seven goals in the first half and four more in the second stanza courtesy of seven different goal scorers.
Chiara Cosenza (Fr., Westfield, N.J.) entered her name in the record books with the 19th hat trick in program history as she found the back of the net on three occasions on Monday. Additionally,
Kat Healey (Sr., King George, Va.) and
Mimi Abusham (So., Los Alamitos, Calif.) recorded multi-goal outings with two goals a piece. The final four goals were scored by
Sophie Ewing (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah),
Emma Frommelt (Jr., Edina, Minn.),
Isabella Romano (So., Syosset, N.Y.) and
Mori Sokoloff (So., Arnold, Md.). The goals by Cosenza and Sokoloff were the first of their young careers.
"We're quite pleased with today's performance," remarked head coach
Carin Gabarra. "We had a lot of players gain valuable minutes, while playing our brand of soccer. We had really good ball movement. We've been working on our possession and connecting passes. We were able to find a good attacking rhythm.
"I'm happy that we were able to see
Sarah McCarthy back on the field, as well as
Cadence Yeats make her debut in goal. We received good 90-minute performances from
Ali Barrow,
Emma Frommelt,
Lucy Gaines and
Mori Sokoloff."
The action started with a heavy Navy feel to it as the host Mids came out buzzing in the attacking third. 6:53 into the contest Healey got the Mids onto the scoreboard as a she controlled a weak clearance and quickly curled a one-timer into the upper-90.
Navy's always potent set piece playbook resulted in the second goal at 24:42 as Sokoloff received a short corner kick and immediately played a looping cross into the six-yard box towards
Jordan Townsend (So., Marriottsville, Md.), who flicked the ball onto Cosenza, who didn't think twice about slamming the ball into the back of the net.
The Mids quickly increased their lead to 3-0 less than four minutes late when Romano cashed in on a turnover by the Saints and rang a long range shot off the crossbar and into the goal.
A frenetic four-goal run between 40:02 and 44:58 sent Navy into the locker room at halftime up 7-0. Abusham was on the receiving of two crisp builds as her goal at 40:02 came off of assists by Ewing and Frommelt before her 42:54 score saw
Lucy Gaines (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) set up Romano before feeding Abusham for her second goal. The duo of Cosenza and Ewing connected for the final two goals as they linked up 34 seconds apart at 44:24 and 44:58, respectively; first Ewing-to-Cosenza and then Cosenza-to-Ewing. Ewing's goal was her first since returning from a season-ending injury that short-circuited her junior season in game two last year.
Frommelt got her chance to finish a goal of her own with Navy's first score of the second half at 68:06 as she put back a loose rebound following a Healey shot. The next time Healey took aim at the goal she beat the Marymount goalkeeper for her second score of the game just 55 seconds later at 69:01.
The final two goals came less than three minutes apart at 81:06 and 84:09 when Cosenza completed her hat trick as she deposited a
Madison Whitworth (Fr., Murfreesboro, Tenn.) lead pass across the goal threshold before Sokoloff saw her long-range shot evade the Marymount goalkeeper.
Sarah McCarthy (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) set up her classmate Sokoloff with a square pass in the midfield.
The goalkeeping duo of
Talley Applewhite (So., Midlothian, Va.) and
Cadence Yeats (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) earned the shared clean sheet. Applewhite turned aside both attempts by the Saints in the first half before giving way to Yeats in the second stanza.
For the game, Navy outshot Marymount, 33-2 with an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Ali Barrow (Fr., Alexandria, Va.), Gaines and
ClaraJane Williams (Fr., Madison, Ga.) all played 60-plus minutes in spearheading the Mids' young defensive corps on Monday.
"We'll turn our attention right back to Patriot League play after tonight because we'll have another tough test ahead on Sunday with Boston," said Gabarra in closing.
Navy will next be in action on Sunday afternoon with a home tilt versus Boston University. The contest between the Mids and Terriers is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff following a Senior Day ceremony to honor Navy's eight members of the Class of 2024.
