ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (2-0) used a total team effort to on Friday night to post a 45-0 victory over Mansfield (0-2) in the home opener for the Midshipmen at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The offense tallied 461 total yards with six touchdowns, while the defense held the Mountaineers scoreless with just 31 total yards.
"We played a pretty well-rounded game through all three phases," head coach
Major Alfonso Meidus, USMC stated after the game. "We came out looking to limit penalties after our last game. Those were two objectives we had – let's stay clean on the penalty factor and play a full game of football. I think we accomplished that today. Mansfield came out and competed, but now we move on to Army next week."
Offensively, Navy rushed for 297 yards, while passing for an additional 164 yards for 461 total yards. Conversely, the Mids' defense limited the Mountaineers to just 66 yards passing and -35 yards rushing for 31 total yards.
Tyler Massena led the team with two rushing touchdowns, while
Victor Otero added a score on the ground. The primary running back duo tallied 142 combined rushing yards with Otero notching 74 and Massena finishing with 68.
Hunter Gennicks led the team with 81 yards, including a long of 47 yards.
Quarter
Brandon Atwood finished the game 6-for-13 for 102 yards and a touchdown passing, while adding a rushing score.
Luke Wagner finished 2-for-3 for 74 yards and a score with
Luke O'Connell closing out the game 1-for-1 with a 15-yard completion.
Kai Sasaki led the receiving corps, finishing with three catches for a team-high 81 yards and a touchdown, while
J.P. Albrecht notched two receptions for 47 yards and a TD.
Defensively, 19 players were credited with a tackle in the game. The Midshipmen finished with 11 tackles for loss, pushing the Mountaineers back 66 total yards. Navy posted seven sacks with seven pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, and an interception.
Andrew Bailey and
Jonathan Swift led the way with six tackles apiece, while
David Niski paced the squad with two sacks.
Trent Parker and
Simon Burger tallied a sack apiece, while
Devyn Martin picked off a Mansfield pass.
Kicker
Mychal Golden was a perfect 6-for-6 on point after touchdown tries while adding a 31-yard field goal to his tally.
Navy opened up the scoring with three touchdowns in the first quarter. Atwood hit Sasaki for a 25-yard touchdown score to put the Midshipmen on the scoreboard three minutes into the first quarter. Five minutes later, Otero powered his way into the checkerboard end zone with a five-yard rush. Atwood called his own number scampering into the end zone from nine yards out to put the Mids in front by three scores.
In the second quarter, the Mids added a pair of touchdowns from Massena. The senior running back used rushes of 23 and 11 yards to extend the Navy advantage to 35-0. The Midshipmen added a field goal from Golden in the third quarter to extend the advantage, while Wagner hit Albrecht for a 19-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to give the Mids 45 points on the day.
The Midshipmen will now hit the road to West Point, N.Y. for the annual Army-Navy Star Game. The game, which is part of the overall Star Series presented by USAA, is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6.
