SPARKS, Md. – USA Lacrosse announced its Division I Women's Preseason All-America list and Navy sophomore midfielder
Ava Yovino was named to the list as an honorable mention selection. Yovino is the Mids' top returner after leading the team with 92 points on 42 goals and a team-best 50 assists during the 2023 season.
She finished the season ranked in the top 15 in the NCAA in assists (5th), assists per game (6th), points per game (10th), and points (11th) – leading the Patriot League in all four categories. Additionally, the freshman finished her inaugural season with 51 draw controls, 25 ground balls, and 20 caused turnovers.
Yovino has earned several accolades throughout the course of her rookie season in 2023, being named to the Tewaaraton Watch List (first freshman in Navy history to be named to the list), USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American (Honorable Mention), Inside Lacrosse All-American (Honorable Mention), Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-American (Third Team), IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region (Second Team – first freshman in Navy history to be named to the list), Inside Lacrosse Power 100 Freshman Preseason Watchlist, All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and First Team All-Patriot League.
Despite playing just one season of collegiate lacrosse, Yovino has already entered into some of Navy's career records. Her 50 assists are the 10th most in a career in program history, while her 92 total points rank 21st and her 51 draw controls are tied for 22nd all-time.
In the Midshipmen's single-season records, Yovino ranked second in assists per game, fifth in assists, and 10th in points.
She etched her name into the Navy freshman record book finishing the top 5 of the rookie annals in points per game (1st), assists per game (1st), points (2nd), assists (2nd), caused turnovers (2nd), caused turnovers per game (3rd), shots (4th), draw controls (4th), draw controls per game (4th), goals (5th), and shots on goal (5th).
Navy begins the 2024 campaign at home against ACC foe Duke. The Midshipmen and Blue Devils will take the field against one another on Friday, Feb. 9 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
