Wrestling Set to Face EIWA Foes Lehigh and Binghamton

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 16th-ranked Navy wrestling team (6-2, 1-0) looks to bounce back from a pair of losses last Friday at the Virginia Duals in its two duals against Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponents this weekend. 

The Mids will take on their longest rival, No. 17 Lehigh (2-3, 2-0), on Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., and then travel to Vestal, N.Y., to battle Binghamton (3-2, 2-1) on Sunday. Both duals will start at 2 p.m.

Navy Individual Notes
Andrew Cerniglia (165) extended his winning streak to a career-high 10 matches two victories at the Virginia Duals. His streak is tied with Grady Griess (285) for the longest on the team this season
• Cerniglia improved to 5-1 in duals this season and 20-4 in his career. His 83.3 winning percentage in duals ranks first on the team 
• The Nazareth, Pa., native is 3-0 against ranked wrestlers this season and 10-10 in his career
• Cerniglia needs two victories this weekend to reach his 60th career win. He would be the third mid to reach 60 wins this season
• Cerniglia also matched his career high with his fifth win by major decision this season at the Virginia Duals
Josh Koderhandt (141) has won 12-consecutive dual matches dating back to last season and is 7-0 in 2023-24
• The Belleville, Ill., native won his fifth match by fall this season and the 20th in his career against Oklahoma's KJ Evans (2:22)
• Koderhandt snapped his four-match losing skid against ranked wrestlers with his 3-1 decision against then No. 22 Clay Carlson of South Dakota State. The junior is 4-4 against ranked wrestlers this season
• Griess is aiming to win the 70th match in his collegiate career over the weekend
• Navy's team captain is tied with Jamier Ferere (285) as the team leader in wins by fall this season with six. 
• Griess won the 20th match by fall in his career against South Dakota State's then No. 32 Luke Rasmussen (6:08)
• He needs six pins to become 10th all-time in program history
• Griess' last four matches have been against ranked opponents. The senior leads the Mids in ranked victories with five in 2023-24
David Key (184) needs two wins this weekend to set a new career high in dual victories in a season. The senior has totaled five dual wins in each of his previous three seasons
• Saturday's matchup against the Mountain Hawks will produce a rivalry in Liam Kilrain's (174) family. His father, Colin, wrestled at Lehigh and is one of only 12 four-time champions in the 110-plus year history of the EIWA. Additionally, he is one of just three wrestlers to win a championship at three different weight classes (167, 177, 190). He was a two-time captain and three-time third-place NCAA finisher. He won 90 percent (87-8) of his matches while at Lehigh, which ranks in the top 10 in school history. He was inducted into the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. Additionally, Liam's brother, Sean, is a senior on Lehigh's wrestling team

Scouting Lehigh
• Lehigh enters the weekend ranked 17th in the nation at 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the EIWA
• The Mountain Hawks will wrestle against Penn Friday night before their matchup against the Mids on Saturday
• Lehigh started the season with three-straight losses to then No. 23 Pitt (21-12), No. 1 Penn State (30-10) and then No. 11 Oklahoma State (25-12), but has won its last two duals. 
• The Mountain Hawks won their first dual last week against Binghamton (29-12) and then pulled up a major upset against then No. 9 Cornell (17-16). Lehigh was behind by eight points with three bouts remaining and won the final three by decision 
• The Mountain Hawks have six ranked wrestlers in their projected lineup, four of which are ranked in the top 10 in their respective weight class
• Freshman Ryan Crookham (133) is ranked No. 1 in the country with an 11-0 overall record and a 5-0 dual record. He has defeated Cornell's Vito Arujau (8-4) and Penn State's Aaron Nagao (6-4), who are currently ranked second and fourth in the nation, respectively
• Luke Stanich (125) clinched Lehigh's win against Cornell with a 3-0 decision against then No. 14 Brett Ungar. Stanich is currently ranked third in his weight class with an 11-1 record 
• Michael Beard (197) leads the Mountain Hawks with 16 wins and is 5-0 in duals. He and Crookham are the only two wrestlers to compete in all five duals this season. Beard is ranked seventh in the country and leads the nation in wins by technical fall (10)
• Nathan Taylor (285) has propelled himself as the top-ranked heavyweight in the EIWA at No. 8 in the country. He is 13-3 overall and 3-2 in duals this season

Navy vs. Lehigh Series
• Saturday will be the 104th meeting between Navy and Lehigh
• The Mountain Hawks are the only opponent the Mids have faced more than 100 times. Penn State is the next closest team at 86
• Lehigh leads the all-time series, 55-48, and is the only team in the EIWA that Navy doesn't have a winning record against
• The 48 victories in the series for the Mids are the third most against a program behind Maryland (72) and Army (52)
• Navy has only beaten Lehigh three times since 1996 (2007, 25-12; 2011, 19-15; 2021, 21-9)
• The Mids are 10-30 when wrestling in Bethlehem and haven't won there since 1995 (22-9)
• Saturday will mark the 73rd-consecutive year the two programs face each other in a dual. Navy and Lehigh haven't wrestled in a dual against one another only 11 times since the inaugural meeting in 1910
• The Mountain Hawks won last year's dual in Annapolis, 21-16
• The 141 and 285-pound bouts will feature rematches from the 2023 EIWA Championship. Koderhandt defeated Malyke Hines by a 7-6 decision in the third-place bout and Griess defeated Taylor by a 5-1 decision in the championship bout. Koderhandt will look to beat Hines for the second-straight time after losing the first two meetings. Griess looks to improve to 3-0 in his career against Taylor. He has outscored Taylor, 14-2, in their two matches

900 Wins and Counting
• Established in 1909, the Navy wrestling program is in its 116th season as a varsity sport. Head coach John Schutz directed the Mids to a 24-9 victory over Penn on March 13, 1909 in their inaugural dual 
• Having amassed a 927-326-26 overall record, Navy captured the program's 900th win behind a 21-12 win victory Maryland on Dec. 6, 2019
• With 74 NCAA Championship appearances in tow, there are just eight programs who have competed in more - Oklahoma State (91), Oklahoma (83), Iowa State (82), Michigan (81), Michigan State (79), Penn State (79), Lehigh (77) and Illinois (76). Like Navy, both Iowa and Minnesota have made 74 appearances
• The Mids, meanwhile, have the 25th-longest active NCAA Championship appearance streak, having competed in each of the last 25 tournaments. Oklahoma leads the country with 73-straight appearances
