VESTAL, N.Y. - The 18th-ranked Navy wrestling team (6-4, 1-2 EIWA) surrendered 11 points in the final three matches in its, 18-17, loss to Binghamton (4-2, 3-1 EIWA) on Sunday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.
The Bearcats held an early, 7-0, lead with wins at 125 and 133, but the Mids won the next five matches to gain a 10-point advantage. Binghamton rallied back with three-straight wins at 184, 197 and 285 to score the final 11 points and complete the comeback to hand Navy its fourth-consecutive loss.Â
Carson Wagner earned the first bonus point of the dual for the Bearcats with a 13-5 major decision over
Dayton DelViscio (125). Wagner scored his first three points with a takedown in the opening period. He was then given the choice of position after DelViscio called an injury timeout, which he used to score an escape. Wagner added four points early in the second period with a reversal and a two-point near fall. DelViscio countered with a reversal to score his first two points. Wagner answered again with his second reversal to gain a 10-2 cushion. He secured the win by major decision with a takedown in the third period to give Binghamton a 4-0 lead.Â
Micah Roes made the score, 7-0, with his victory against No. 29
Brendan Ferretti (133). Ferretti recorded an escape early in the third period to tie the match at one. He attempted to get more aggressive to take his first lead, but Roes countered to score a takedown. Roes added over a minute of riding time over the remainder of the match to win by a 5-1 decision.Â
Josh Koderhandt (141) extended his winning streak in duals to 14 with a win by technical fall (20-5 / 7:00) against Nate Lucier. The 20th-ranked wrestler in the nation opened the scoring with an escape in the second period. He then recorded two takedowns to go up, 7-1. Koderhandt took control of the match the final period, scoring four takedowns and adding the riding time point to make the team score, 7-5.Â
Â
Kaemen Smith (149) gave the Mids their first lead (8-7) with a 5-2 decision over Caleb Sweet. Smith chose the down position to begin the second period, leading to an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Smith scored the lone takedown of the bout moments later to gain a four-point lead.Â
Â
Sweet recorded an escape before the end of the second period to make the score, 4-1. Sweet chose the down position to start the final period and Smith prevented him from escaping until just 13 seconds remained in the match to secure riding time and the victory.Â
Carter Baer and
Jonathan Ley (157) entered the third period in a 1-1 tie. Ley hoped to score a quick escape after choosing the down position, but he was called for three cautions to award Baer a point. Ley collected himself and recorded an escape to tie the match at two. Baer looked to be in position to score a go-ahead takedown, but Ley scrambled out and scored a takedown himself to take a 5-2 lead.
Â
Ley held Baer scoreless for the remainder of the match and added the riding time point to win by a 6-2 decision and giving Navy an 11-7 advantage on the scoreboard.Â
The Mids took a seven-point lead thanks to the 12th-straight victory by No. 20
Andrew Cerniglia (165). Cerniglia fell behind, 3-0, early after No. 21 Brevin Cassella scored a takedown. Cerniglia scored his first points with a reversal and then tied the match after Cassella was called for a technical violation.Â
Â
Cassella opted to go neutral instead of down to start the second period in hopes of scoring another takedown. Neither wrestler scored over the next two minutes, keeping the match tied, 3-3, entering the final period. Cassella was called for an illegal hold shortly into the third, giving Cerniglia a 4-3 lead. Cerniglia then scored an escape for the final point of the match to win by a 5-3 decision.Â
Danny Wask made the score, 17-7, with his win in overtime against Dimitri Gamkrelidze. The two wrestlers entered sudden victory tied, 1-1, after each scored an escape in regulation. Wask immediately went to work and recorded the match-winning takedown to earn a 4-1 decision.
Â
The Mids needed to win just one of the final three bouts to secure the dual, but the Bearcats claimed all three matches.
Thirteenth-ranked Jacob Nolan began the comeback with an 8-3 decision against
David Key (184). Nolan outscored Key, 4-1, in the third period and added the riding time point to bring Binghamton back within seven points.Â
The top-ranked Bearcat wrestler, No. 12 Lou DePrez, made the score, 17-15, with a 20-4 (5:47) technical fall against
Daniel Williams, setting up a winner-take-all match at heavyweight.Â
The heavyweight battle featured No. 18
Grady Griess (285) and No. 21 Cory Day, marking the second-straight year the two faced each other to decide the dual. Griess, who won last year's matchup by a 7-0 decision, fell behind, 3-0, after Day scored a takedown. Day prevented Griess from scoring an escape and racked up over a minute of riding time before the first period ended. Griess chose down to begin the second period and scored a huge reversal to make the score, 3-2. Griess also erased Day's riding time advantage with the commanding second period. Day decided to start the third period neutral and the move paid off after securing the match with his second takedown to win by a 6-2 decision.Â
Navy will continue its road stretch next Sunday when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina. The dual is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
