Austin Benigni and
Mike Woods from the Navy men's basketball team each earned a weekly award on Monday. Benigni was named the Patriot League Player of the Week for the sport and Woods was selected as the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman.
Benigni averaged a league-best 22.0 points per game last week and added a Navy-high seven assists. He played all but 4:35 of a possible 80 minutes in two games against Lehigh and Army.
He first scored a career-high 32 points in Navy's 71-69 victory over Lehigh. Benigni stepped to the foul line with the score tied and 3.8 seconds showing on the clock. He made both attempts from the charity stripe to close out the scoring and give him an 8-10 effort from the free throw line.
Benigni then posted 12 points and handed out four assists during the team's 57-53 win over Army.
Woods capped the best scoring week of his career by totaling 17 points in the victory over the Black Knights. He was 6-8 from the field and 5-8 from the foul line to set a new career high. Woods additionally grabbed six offensive rebounds –– one shy of tying the record for an Army-Navy game –– as part of an eight-rebound effort.
His Army scoring total was his second career high on the week as he posted 16 points (his previous high was 13) in the midweek game against the Mountain Hawks. Woods was 6-10 from the field and made all four of his free throw attempts and also added four offensive caroms and six rebounds in all.
Navy next plays Wednesday at Bucknell.
