Wrestling Returns to the Mat for Franklin & Marshall Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 16th-ranked Navy wrestling team opens the second half of its season on Friday to compete in the 11th annual David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open at the Alumni Sports and Fitness Center in Lancaster, Pa.

The tournament is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will feature over 500 wrestlers from 29 different institutions. The tournament will not have team scoring.

Tickets are available for purchase at the event and will cost $20 for adults and $10 for fans 18 and under, military members and senior citizens.

Navy Team Notes
• The Mids are coming off a 38-0 victory against American on Dec. 21
• Navy won all 10 bouts and earned bonus points in five (141, 165, 174, 197, 285) to defeat its first Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) opponent this season 
• The win marked the first time the Mids shut out an EIWA foe since 1989 when they beat Franklin & Marshall, 37-0
• Navy held an opponent scoreless for the second time this season. The Mids hadn't posted multiple shutouts in a single season since 2020-21 when they defeated Cleveland State (37-0) and George Mason (44-0)
• Navy also competed in the Soldier Salute (Dec. 29-30) over the holiday break
• Josh Koderhandt (141, 4th), Zyan Hall (184, 6th) Garrett Totten (133, 6th), Kaemen Smith (149, 8th) and Daniel Williams (197, 8th) all placed in their respective weight class
• The Mids will wrestle in their ninth tournament of the season on Friday 
• Navy has also competed in the Clarion Open, Navy Classic, Shorty Hitchcock Classic, Mat Town College Open I, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Patriots Open, Wilkes Open and Soldier Salute
• The Mids were bumped up to No. 16 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I Top 25 Poll, which was announced on Dec. 21
• Navy has been ranked in six-consecutive polls after being tabbed 19th on Nov. 14

Navy Individual Notes
• Danny Wask (174) and Grady Griess (285) are the only mids to place first in a tournament this season. Both wrestlers were crowned champions at the Navy Classic. Additionally, Wask and Griess placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational
• Griess, Totten and Smith are tied as the team leader in total wins this season with 13
• Totten looks to continue his streak of placing in tournaments. He has finished in the top six in his last three, which included a second-place finish at the Wilkes Open on Dec. 22
• Andrew Cerniglia (165) won the 50th match of his career at the Soldier Salute by fall (0:42) over South Dakota State's Brock Fettig. The senior is one of four active mids with 50 or more wins (Koderhandt, 65; Griess, 63; David Key, 56)
• Cerniglia also pinned Minnesota's Tim Stapleton (1:31) in the opening round to win his first match by fall since the 2022 EIWA Championship when he upset Lehigh's Josh Humphreys in the semifinals
• Jamier Ferere (285) surpassed his win total from his freshman campaign with a 3-1 record at the Solider Salute. The sophomore owns a 12-6 record and leads Navy with six victories by major decision this season
• Luke Lucerne (149) was named the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) athlete of the week, presented by Northrop Grumman, on Dec. 26 for his role in Navy's victory over American. The Newtown, Pa., native defeated Ryan Zimmerman by a 13-7 decision to win the first dual match in his collegiate career
• Lucerne is the second wrestler to claim the honor during the 2023-24 campaign after Key was selected for helping the Mids upset then No. 23 Illinois (23-18) on Nov. 4
• The second EIWA rankings of the season were announced on Dec. 29. Garnering a ranking from Navy was Evan Tallmadge (125, 7th), Brendan Ferretti (133, 5th), Koderhandt (4th), Nicholas Vafiadis (149, 6th), Cerniglia (5th), Wask (3rd), Key (2nd), Jacob Lucas (197, 7th) and Griess (2nd)

Franklin & Marshall Open Notes
• Head coach Cary Kolat is expected to send 24 wrestlers to compete on Friday
• Navy has appeared in every Franklin & Marshall Open since it began in 2013, joining Millersville and Princeton as the only schools to compete all 10 years (2021 canceled due to Covid-19). 
• Seven mids have won titles at the event, which is tied with Maryland and Virginia Tech for the third most from one program. Additionally, Navy is tied for second in tournament history with 13 finalists and fourth with 28 place winners
• Ferretti, Griess and Jacob Koser (197) were crowned champions in their respective weight class last season
• Only four wrestlers have placed first multiple times at the Franklin & Marshall Open
• The Mids have had at least three wrestlers place in their last four appearances

Tickets for the 2024 Army-Navy Star Match, which is part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA are on sale now HERE. The Mids will play host to the 68th Star Match on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall. Fans can also use the link to purchase tickets against Lock Haven (Feb. 2) and Bucknell (Feb. 3).

Navy travels to Hampton, Va., to wrestle in the 43rd annual Virginia Duals. The Mids will face Oklahoma (3 p.m.) on Friday and South Dakota State (1:30 p.m.) and Wisconsin (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
