Navy Swimming and Diving Defeats Loyola and George Mason, Falls to No. 13 / 19 LSU

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Lauren Walsh and Michael Phillips each won a pair of individual events for the Navy swimming and diving teams during victories by the Mids over George Mason and Loyola and a loss to LSU, Friday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.

The Navy women's team (4-2) recorded a 182.5-117.5 win over Loyola (2-2) and a 226-73 victory over George Mason (1-3) and dropped a 222-77 decision to No. 13 LSU (3-1).  In the men's meet, the Mids (4-2) defeated both Loyola (2-2), 193-106, and George Mason (1-3), 231-68, and fell to No. 19 LSU (3-1), 180-119.

"It was terrific to have George Mason, Loyola and LSU here tonight for this meet," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  "It was a perfect meet setup for where we currently stand in our training and the season.  There were some terrific races from beginning to end tonight as we are happy with our ability to keep up with this level of competition."

"A big thank you and congratulations to LSU, George Mason and Loyola for a great meet," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison.  "We were proud of the energy and effort our team brought today.  They dug deep to earn two victories in our three meets.  Our consistent effort over the last three weeks of competition has been very good.  We do have to clean up some details over the next few weeks, but are excited to get back to work."

Walsh posted victories in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races.  She recorded a time of 1:03.17 to win the former by 35-hundredths of a second and a 2:18.05 to place first in the latter event by 1.45 seconds.  Navy's Maddie Koutavas placed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.45.

"Leading the charge for us was Lauren Walsh with her two big wins," said Morrison.

Phillips also won the 200 breast as he touched the wall first in the race by 2.59 seconds with his effort of 2:00.37.  He would go on to lead a 1-2-3-4 Navy finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.38.  He bettered teammate Gio Aguirre by 1.14 seconds for the victory.

"Michael Phillips had a terrific meet in winning his two races," said Roberts.  "He was exceptional in each race and we are very happy for him."

Everet Andrew nearly joined Walsh and Phillips with a pair of victories.  He first posted a time of 1:38.25 to win the 200 free by 11-hundredths of a second, then completed the 100 freestyle race in a time of 44.80 to finish in second place.

Also earning a gold and a silver medal for the Mids was Juan Mora.  He won the 100 breast by three-quarters of a second with a time of 53.81 and placed second in the 100 fly by 17-hundredths of a second with his clocking of 48.86.

Ela Habjan placed second for the Mids in the 100 back as her time of 55.00 was one-quarter of a second behind event winner Valerija Egorova from LSU.

More second-place finishes by Navy during the individual event portion of the men's meet came in the 1000 free as Dean Jones posted a time of 9:15.79, in the 200 fly when Tyler Kaminski finished the event in a time of 1:49.72 and in one-meter diving on Blakeman Shaw's score of 340.10 points.  Additionally, the Navy men's team recorded a time of 3:00.15 to place second in the 400 free relay.
