First-Place Colgate Stops Navy Winning Streak

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Colgate extended its winning streak to five matches in a row and halted a three-match winning streak by the Navy volleyball team with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-20) victory by the Raiders (12-9, 9-1) over the Mids (4-15, 4-6), Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis.

"I thought we had a really good practice week and went into this match with a great mindset," said Navy head coach Paco Labrador.  "Credit Colgate for playing with a ton of speed and power.  They put up a huge block on defense tonight and hit consistently on offense as always.

"We will regroup and continue to battle every day."

Set One
Colgate took a 12-6 lead only to see Navy close to within one point at 13-12.  From there the Raiders slowly extended their lead out to 16-12 and 19-13 on their way to winning the opening set.

The Raiders did much of their scoring with their block as they totaled seven in the frame.

Set Two
Colgate jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage.  Navy tried to cut into the margin as the deficit soon was only 8-5, but it soon was a 12-5 lead for the Raiders.

Set Three
Just as in set two, Colgate made its move when the score was 8-5. This time the Raiders built 15-7 and 18-9 cushions.  Navy was able to close to within five points at 22-17 but could not draw any closer.

Inside the Numbers
Colgate finished the match with 14 blocks to Navy's three.  That was a big reason why the Raiders outhit the Mids, .375-.042.  Colgate also held a 10-5 edge in aces.

Farrah Eike continued her strong play with 10 kills to lead all Navy players in the match.

Up Next
Navy returns to the Wesley A. Brown Field House Saturday for a 7 p.m. match against Army.
