Navy Lightweights Row versus Eastern Sprints League Rivals at Sunday’s Princeton Chase

Mids entered nine boats in competition at Lake Carnegie

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Navy lightweight rowing program was in action on Sunday with crews racing in time trial head contests down a three-mile stretch of Lake Carnegie as part of the 2024 Princeton Chase. Taking on numerous Eastern Sprints League rivals in lightweight-only events, as well as a variety of heavyweight institutions in open-weight events, the Mids came away with three top-10 results led by a fifth-place finish in the men's lightweight eights contest.

Taking on opponents, whom they will see in the spring during Eastern Sprints League competitions, the Mids' day begin with the men's lightweight eights race. Entering the majority of its roster with five of the 21 entrees in the field, Navy 'A' came in fifth overall with a time of 12:53.299. The Mids' second crew finished just over 15 seconds back at 13:08.570, good enough for 10th place. The remainder of its three crews finished in positions, 15 (C), 16 (D) and 19 (E), with respective times of 13:32.968, 13:38.170 and 14:02.790.

After a two-hour break following that initial race, Navy had one entry in the open-weight "round two" eights event. Taking on crews from both the heavyweight and lightweight classifications, the Mids turned in a time of 14:01.210 that ranked 13th overall, fifth among lightweight boats.

The final action of Sunday came in the open-weight fours contest. Once again taking on a mixed field, Navy nearly fought its way into a podium finish as its 'A' crew broke out with the fourth fastest split time of 8:01.573 before wrapping up the final portion of the time trial with a sixth-place time of 14:14.621, that was just 3.212 seconds shy of Columbia's heavyweight 'A' crew, who placed third at 14:11.409. Among lightweight crews, Cornell and Penn slid in-between the Mids and Lions in the standings with times of 14:13.099 and 14:13.945 to finish fourth and fifth overall. Two other Navy entries raced in the 4+ event and placed 14th (B) and 17th (C) respectively at 15:00.129 and 15:11.970.

Sunday marked the final official fall competition for the Navy Lightweights as the program will suit up next Saturday with a series of scrimmages at the UVA Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
