WEST CALDWELL, N.J. – The Navy sprint football team improved to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division with a 28-14 victory over Caldwell (3-4, 0-3 in the CSFL South) at Bonnel Field in West Caldwell, N.J. The Midshipmen broke a scoreless tie with 33 seconds remaining in the first half and proceeded to score 28 straight en route to a 14-point victory.
"We made some mental errors that we can't have against Army," head coach
Captain Carter Reading, USMC said after the game. "We're working towards perfection and we are not there yet. Caldwell was a good team, and we showed we can win when we make mistakes. We just have to be better, and we will."
Navy finished the game with 201 total yards on 58 yards rushing and 143 yards passing, while Caldwell tallied 292 passing yards with 50 yards rushing for 342 total yards. The Mids' defense recorded four interceptions to thwart the Cougars' offense and set up the Midshipmen with excellence field position.
Luke Wagner finished the game 11-for-20 for 114 yards with three touchdowns. Backup quarterback
Luke O'Connell completed one pass for 29 yards in relief.
Biamungu Nkere led the team with three receptions for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Chris Stumpf also finished with three catches, tallying 21 yards and a touchdown.
Jackson Suddath hauled in a pair of receptions for 47 yards, while
Jake Berger added three catches for 24 yards.
Broderick Freeman led the team with 26 yards rushing, while
Hunter Gennicks added 24 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Navy finished the game with 12 tackles for loss, five sacks, four interceptions, and three pass breakups. The Midshipmen held the Cougars on 12 of 19 third down attempts and six of eight fourth down tries.
Jake Wolinski led the way with 12 total tackles, including five solo stops, and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Sam Stotler added nine stops with 1.5 tackles for loss and a half a sack.
David Niski notched six stops including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Major Kent and
Mick Tabor joined Wolinski and Stotler with 1.5 TFLs Tabor and
Simon Burger were credited with sacks with Stotler combining for a sack.
Tyler Cox and Seamus Carrasco both picked off a pair of passes, while Carrasco added a pass breakup. Burger and
Sean Bettwy also broke up passes on the night.
With 1:47 remaining in the first half, Carrasco picked off a Caldwell pass and returned it 21 yards to set up Navy at the home team's 37 yardline. Wagner connected with Suddath for 18 yards to move into the red zone. A six-yard pass to Stumpf and two-yard rushes by Gennicks and Wagner gave the Midshipmen a first and goal from the nine. Stumpf caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Wagner to put the Mids on the scoreboard.
Jacori Sutton converted his first of four PATs on the night to put Navy in front 7-0 with 33 ticks on the clock before intermission.
In the third quarter, Navy extended its lead to 28-0. The Mids took the second-half kickoff and worked their way down the field 47 yards in five plays for a touchdown. The drive was capped by a 36-yard TD strike from Wagner to Nkere. The freshman wide receiver caught another touchdown pass later in the quarter as Nkere hauled in a seven-yard TD midway through the quarter to put the Midshipmen in front 21-0. Following a fourth-down stop, Navy got the ball at the Caldwell 31 yardline. The Mids needed just three plays to score their third touchdown of the quarter. O'Connell connected with Suddath for a 29-yard reception to move down to the two-yardline and two plays later O'Connell called his own number for the one-yard TD rush.
Caldwell was able to cut into the Navy lead in the fourth quarter. The home team used a pair of touchdowns to cut the margin in half, but the Mids were able to hold on for the win. The scores by the Cougars ended a stretch of 13 consecutive quarters scoreless quarters by the Midshipmen defense. Caldwell methodically worked its way down the field 12 plays for 65 yards for the first touchdown before marching down the field 63 yards in seven plays for the Cougar's second score of the game.
Up next, the Midshipmen, who are the CSFL South Division Champions, will travel to New York to face off against Army who won the CSFL North. The game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, and will be live streamed.
