ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The strong sophomore campaign of
Zanai Barnett-Gay from the Navy women's basketball team continues this week as she is recognized as the NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman. The talented guard from Glenn Dale, Maryland was selected for her efforts this past week in competitions versus Dartmouth and Stetson. This is the second time in just over a month of action this 2024-25 season, that Barnett-Gay has been chosen as the Naval Academy Athletic Association's premier performer of the week.
This past week, Barnett-Gay extended her streak of double-digit scoring performances to all 10 games in '24-25 and all 40 games of her career with a season-high 26 points versus Dartmouth on Wednesday before going for 13 on Saturday in Navy's victory over Stetson. She added to her respective totals with 17 combined rebounds, four assists and three steals over those two games for a weekly average of 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 three pointers per game, while shooting .417 from the field, .444 from three and .556 from the foul line as Navy went 1-1.
Through 10 non-conference games so far this season, Barnett-Gay and the Mids have posted a 7-3 record; their win total is tied for the most in the Patriot League so far. Individually, she ranks first in the conference with 2.3 steals per game, second in scoring with 18.2 points per game, fourth with 7.1 rebounds per game and ninth with 2.7 assists per contest. Nationally, Barnett-Gay's scoring average ranks 53rd overall for all NCAA DI competitors.
After a 12-day break for final exams, the Navy women's basketball team will step back out onto the hardcourt for its final non-conference game next Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. versus the University of Delaware at Alumni Hall.
