WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Josh Scovens made three free throws with 1.8 seconds left in overtime to give Army (8-17, 4-8) a 69-67 win over the Navy (8-15, 4-8) men's basketball team, Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena in West Point. The game served as the annual Star Game, part of the Star Series presented by USAA.
"Our team fought," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "We had great grit down nine, came back and made our free throws and made big plays. I am proud of this team. We didn't make the last play. We made a mistake, but there are plays throughout the game we should have made and didn't. Then maybe it wouldn't come down to the last play. Give them (Army) credit. Their kid caught the ball, turned and got the foul he needed. I feel bad for our guys, but we are going to continue to fight and live for another day, continue trying to get better as a team and hopefully will be playing our best basketball at the end of February and March. That's all you really can do. I feel bad for our guys. They worked hard and fought and had a chance to win."
Navy held a 31-30 lead at halftime and expanded the margin to five points at 35-30 and 37-32 in the early stages of the second half. Following a Navy timeout, the Mids gave the ball to Benigni who drove down the right side of the lane. His running attempt missed the mark, but Draper was there for the offensive board. His twisting putback attempt missed, but he was knocked to the ground on the play with 4.7 seconds left. Draper had to leave the game due to falling on his back. Army selected
Mitch Fischer to shoot Draper's foul shots and he made both attempts to tie the game at 56.
