ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- American held the Navy men's basketball team to season lows for points and field goal percentage in a 59-42 victory for the Eagles (14-12, 8-5) over the Mids (8-16, 4-9), Wednesday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
"Just really, really disappointed in our play tonight," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "I was very fearful of the way we lost the game Saturday that the team would beat us twice and we didn't play them but once. We had no energy tonight, and that's the thing I tried to emphasize to them yesterday; you need to play the game with great enthusiasm. We have to figure out a way to win a game."
American held a 16-14 lead before it went on a 14-2 run to take a 30-16 advantage with three minutes left in the half. After a
Lysander Rehnstrom triple accounted for Navy's first field goal in seven minutes, the Eagles stretched their lead to 35-19 before going into halftime with a 37-22 lead.
Navy shot 24.1 percent (7-29) from the field in the first half and American made 50 percent (11-22) of its shots from the floor. The Eagles also were 11-12 from the foul line while the Mids were 3-6.
Navy held the Eagles to just 22 second half points -- 18 of which were scored by Matt Rogers, on his way to a 25-point night -- but the margin never dipped below 13 points after halftime.
The Mids shot 28.3 percent (15-53) for the game, which included a 7-23 (30.4%) effort from three-point range. Navy also was just 5-13 (38.5%) from the foul line. The Mids scored two second chance points on their 10 offensive rebounds.
"If we don't make some shots it is going to really hard to get out of this thing (losing streak)," said DeChellis. "I thought our overall enthusiasm was not there. We are the ones who got us in this and we are the only ones who can get us out of it."
Navy's previous season low for points was 48 in a season-opening loss at Campbell and its prior low for field goal percentage was 31.6 percent in an overtime loss at George Washington.
American made 44.2 percent (19-43) of its shots in the game, including a 40-percent effort (6-15) from the charity stripe. The Eagles finished the game 15-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line.
"If you had told me before the game that American would score 59 points and they were only going to make six threes, I would say we have a really good chance to win the game. They should the most and make the most threes in the league."
The Eagles outscored the Mids, 26-16, in points in the paint. Navy committed eight turnovers and forced 12, but held just a one-point advantage (7-6) in points after turnovers.
Rehnstrom connected on a third three-point field goal in the second half to end the game with nine points.
Austin Benigni led Navy with 11 points and four assists.
Navy takes to the road for its next two games, a back-to-back stretch that begins Saturday at Boston U.
