BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its weekly award winners and three Navy women's lacrosse student-athletes earned honors following the Midshipmen's 10-9 victory over No. 24 Duke in the season opener. Senior
Caroline Stefans was named Defensive Player of the Week, while freshmen
Felicia Giglio and
Mikayla Williams earned Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week distinction, respectively.
Stefans anchored Navy's defense that held the nationally-ranked Blue Devils to single-digit goals. She picked up three ground balls, while adding a caused turnover. Stefans held Duke's leading scorer Katie DeSimone to three points, of which, two goals were off of free-position opportunities. Additionally, the Coral Springs, Fla. native assisted in the Navy transition game, helping the Midshipmen convert 17 of 18 clear attempts (94.4%).
Giglio earned her first collegiate victory at goal, working a complete game the victory over No. 24 Duke. She held the potent Blue Devil offense to single-digit goals en route to helping Navy to a win. Giglio finished with six saves, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. The Bayport, N.Y. native held Duke to two or less goals in three quarters. With the win, the Midshipmen have at least one win over a ranked opponent in seven of the last eight seasons.
Williams finished with three points on a pair of goals and an assist in her first collegiate game. Additionally, she added a team-high five ground balls with four draw controls and a caused turnover. Tied 1-1, Williams gave the Midshipmen a 2-1 lead with her first collegiate goal – a lead the Mids would not relinquish. The Bexley, Ohio native added an assist on
Lindsay Beardmore's highlight goal, while adding a second goal in the second quarter.
Navy returns to action next weekend as the Midshipmen play host to East Carolina. Opening draw between the Mids and Pirates is slated for 11:30 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
