PHOENIX, Ariz. // The Navy men's golf team has spent the better part of its spring break in Phoenix where the Mids made their first appearance at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Tuesday and Wednesday. Navy turned in a 38-over par 890 (301-288-301) over the course of three rounds to place 16th at the Grand Canyon Invitational with the par-71 GCU Golf Course serving as the host venue.
Noah Nuez (Jr / Laveen, Ariz.) and
Jack Tarzy (So / Medford, N.J.) paced the Mids as both players shot a 9-over par 222. Nuez turned in the Mids' low round of the tournament with a 1-under par 70 in Tuesday's second round. Meanwhile, Tarzy also had a strong showing over his second 18 holes, shooting par.
Chip Deegan (So / Newport Beach, Calif.) finished a stroke behind his Navy teammates with a 10-over par 223 (75-73-75), followed by
Derek Weaver's (So / Hackettstown, Va.) 12-over par 225 (76-74-75) and
Danny Auffant's (Fr / Bellevue, Wash.) 17-over par 230 (74-79-77).
Tournament Notes
• The 16-team tournament featured 3 teams ranked among the nation's top 100 and 10 inside the top 200.
• Cal State Fullerton, ranked 72nd in the country, put together a spectacular final round and came from behind to upset the host Grand Canyon Lopes, who held the lead going into Wednesday's final round. Cal State Fullerton shot a 13-under par 271 in the final round to finish 24-under par (279-278-271=838), while 62nd-ranked Grand Canyon,coming off back-to-back top-five finishes to begin the spring season, shot a 1-under par 283 in the final round to close out the tournament at 23-under par (276-270-283).
• Grand Canyon's Tommaso Zorzetto claimed individual medalist honors after finished the three-round tournament with a 15-under par 198 (65-65-68) ... he shot the two-lowest rounds of the tournament on Tuesday to jump out to a comfortable lead.
• Cal State Fullerton, meanwhile, had two golfers finish among the top five, including Russell Howlett (69-69-66) who tied Valparaiso's Caleb VanArragon (66-68-70) for second with a 9-under par 204, while Garrett Boe tied for fifth with a 7-under par 206 (70-68-68).
• There were 25 golfers who finished the tournament shooting under par.
The Mids will be back in action March 25-26 when they compete in the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va. Deegan took medalist honors at last year's Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate with a 6-under par 207, while the Mids tied for fourth in the team standings.
